Thanks Melissa
My name is Suzanne and my 10 year old daughter was
Thanks for listening, Suzanne
diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on Feb. 7th 2002. She is doing great
and even got to attend a 3 week diabetes camp this summer. I would
like to be able to talk with others who are going through or have
been through all the emotions of a child to preteen with diabetes.
She is a wonderful kid but sometimes her emotional state is so
confusing. Since I don’t have any friends in our area I just want to
be sure I am handling everything the right way! LOL When you have
someone to talk to it can make all the difference in the world

Hey Suzanne! My son is 9, and was diagnosed in 1999. He just went to
his first camp this year, also. Do you have a family history of
diabetes? Or was this a total shock like it was for us? Take care.

Thanks Melissa
Her dad’s mother had it her whole life and my
great grandmother also. She went to camp Sweeney for the first
session. She had a wonderful time and still talks about all the fun
they had! It was so cool to hear of a camp for kids with diabetes.
How long did your son go and did he have fun? Shelby is giving her
own shots now thanks to camp. It gives her more control so she is
dealing with everything much better.

The camps in KS are are only for one week, 5 days for the younger
ones, so he was still in the 5 day group this year. He loved it, and
there was a counselor with the pump there, so the boys got to get
some exposure to it. He does most of his diabetes ’stuff’ on his own,
so the whole point of camp, for us, was really just to have time away
from us. We don’t have a babysitter, so he is with one of us 24 hours
a day except in school and the 1 week he spends with grandmas. It was
good for him to be with other boys his age, and it was the first time
in 5 years that he was not with one of us or a grandma! He loved it,
and wants to go again next year- we’ll see about this one, it’s a 3
hour drive for us, but there may be one closer in MO. Is your
daughter accepting the diabetes well? Did camp help her? I wish we
would have known and had the money to send him to camp years ago!
Take care,
Melissa

You are as bad as me! LOL We watch our own kids and we don’t have any
We went to the seminar on pumps and pens etc. Her experiance at camp
relatives near us so 3 weeks of camp was wonderful for her and us
with the pumps was it wasn’t for her. At least not now. The kids that
had them had to remove them before going swimming and she is a
dolphin who just happens to walk! hehehe We do love the pens though,
so easy to carry and use. We eat out a lot and the pens have helped
her become more independent also.
She learned a lot of good stuff at camp but also a few bad habits.
All in all it was a great experience but when she got home we had to
break her of some whinning and other issues she picked up there.
If we can afford it, she wants to go again next year. I guess I
should start saving now! LOL
