Hi
my name is Eileen Todesco. I was diagnosed as having Type 1
diabetes on Oct. 11, 2001. It threw me for a loop big time because
there is no history of diabetes in my family. I’m in my early 30’s so
you can assume it was a big shock to me. I hope to garner any piece
of information I can learn about diabetes. My bg’s are level now…
when I was first hospitalizied, my bg was 649! Yikes.. my question
now is about the insulin pump. From what I’ve been hearing, the pump
is literally a big time-saver, allowing diabetics more freedom. Any
of you have opinions on this?

Eileen! Welcome to the group! My son is the only person in the
family to have diabetes, also, so I kind of know where you’re coming
from on the shock aspect. Boy, you’re just recently diagnosed! I
can’t help you with the pumps, but there are others here who may
know. I would like to know more about them myself, but he is still
too young for that option I think. Hopefully someone else will pipe
in here and help you :). And feel free to post any other questions
you have( if you look back at the past posts I do this all the time
LOL). Welcome!

Hi. I just learned that I have type one diabetes. I have actually
had the disease all my life, but until now I have not know about it.
I am 20 years old and I am a junior in college. I am writing to find
out if it as difficult for everyone else as it is for me. Thanks.

Hi, my name is Benita. My son Bryan, 6 was just diagnosed with Type 1
diabetes a month ago. It’s been rough but we’ve come a long way and
have educated ourselves with it. It’s going well. I also have 2 girls
who are 9 and 12. And we’re homeschooling.

Hi Benita .. I am Have a son aged 7 (nearly 8). Nicolas was diagnosed with Type one diabetes just after he turned 6. It has been a long hard road .. still is .. and I am learning all the time .. it is ongoing .. I don’t think one will ever know everything about it .. I surf the net regularly for information recipes and things. Nicolas has done really well so far .. his 3 monthly levels are 7.5……which his endo says is good
So he and I must be doing something right. I used to be so strict on what he ate.. so much so that he was hiding food :(. I talked to his endo and he said to ease up a bit relax.. and it has worked. Nic is happier I am less stressed. He still eats what he is supposed to eat but I let him eat other stuff now and then too….When his levels aren’t high. He wakes sometimes in the night around midnight.. 1am and says he is hungry so we take his levels an he has jelly beans if low .. and a snack and a drink. We sue the new SofTac machine (well new here
in Australia)..I can sometimes take his levels during the night without waking him as I don’t have to prick his finger I do it on the base of the thumb or anywhere up the arm.. I find this a big help for both of us. Nicolas takes in a morning dose 2mls Actrapid & 10mls Prothapane at the moment. Dinner time dose is Actrapid 3mls & 6mls Prothapane.I wish you luck in your quest of knowledge about diabetes 1. If you want to chat email me if you like nicolas_j_1995@… .
Take care .

Leanne,
I don’t know what these kinds are. My son is on Humalog or Humilin, anyway, it’s the cloudy kind and only once a day right now since he’s in the honeymoon period. I put your addy in my address book, thanks, I’ll write!

Last week it was 6.6. We watch the carb intake as well
I don’t know what these levels mean yet since my son hasn’t had his first check up yet. It’s coming up next month though. Benita

Hi, My name is Eileen, I just joined this group. I myself do not
have diabetes but my father does. He’s 46 and has had this horrible
disease for about fifteen years now. He’s in and out of the hospital
all the time, partially because he has been non compliant for the
past decade. He’s blind, has chronic renal failure, and horrible
neuropathy (peripheral and autonomic) His body is a mess. It’s hard
to watch this. For those of you who have diabetes or know someone
who does please make sure that they follow their diet. It’s key to
saving their quality of life as they get older.

We are all here in one way or another.
I have noticed that only nine people have voted on Jeff’s poll about how long we have had diabetes. I am curious as to who has had this disease the longest. Jeff included a choice for 75 years. If anyone on this group has had diabetes for that long or knows of someone that has had it for that long, then my hat is off to you. I salute you. That is an amazing feat of determination. I hope that we all make it that long.
Steve
The polls don’t include anything about being a parent or caregiver of a diabetic. Becky has been diabetic since Sept 2000

Intellegent? I was near the top of my class my entire school life (but I liked school & had parents who are/were relatively intellegent).
Short? I’m about 5′8″ (tall for a female), but again, it could be attributed to genetics (both sides of the family have very tall males, females are hit & miss).
Depression? Yeah, that one I can see. Luckily, I have been able to fight that one well.
Hey…has anyone heard from Jenny lately??? I hope she’s feeling better!!!! Jenny….yooo hoooo…….you out there?? Let us know how school is going!!!! <<HUGE HUG

Some of the things I was told:
Diabetics are usually more intelligent…..( my thoughts, they have to be to regulate themselves)
Intelligent I agree with….this group is a testament of it
Diabetics are usually short ???
Diabetics (written in a book) are usually depressed because of thier ongoing illness????

every time Syd goes to the doctor they are so excited that she is in the 75-80 percentile for height and act like it is a really big deal. My oldest was always above 90 and my second almost as high so it is no big deal to me and we consider her our peanut, being the youngest and 8 does mean she is the shortest in the house nut she seems smaller then the girls at the same age. ( I’m only 5′ 7″, but hubby is 6′ 5″)
just my 2 cents,

Has anybody heard from Judith? I was just wondering. I haven’t seen any
posts from her.

Hi,
I had an email from Judith a while ago. She has gotten her legs back under her and has not stopped since. I miss hearing from her on a regular basis, though!
Thanks for asking about her. I will email this weekend and let her know she is missed.
