Is diabetes like a broken leg?
In the Winter 2001/2002 issue of Pediatric Update published by
Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, Cleveland, Ohio, there is an
article by Carin Cunningham, Ph.D. titled “Study Examines
Psychological and Quality-of-Life Issues Affecting Children with IBD
(inflammatory bowel syndrome)” and in that article Dr. Cunningham
says: “It’s not like having a broken leg or diabetes.”
Can you believe that Dr. Cunningham so easily belittles diabetes and
thinks having Type 1 diabetes is “simply” like having a broken leg?
Personally, I find this comparison insulting. Is this what they are
teaching to the doctors of tomorrow?
Carin Cunningham, PhD, is an Instructor of Pediatrics and Psychiatry
at Case Western Reserve University’s School of Medicine.

I went to thier website and could not find this article. I am
offended, also. I can see no relationship whatsoever between diabetes
and a broken leg! What could there be? One is an accidantal, acute
situation where the other is through no fault of the patient and is a
serious chronic condition! I can tell you when I am looking at med
schools, this won’t be one of those I consider! How can a doctor be
so unfeeling to make this disease sound so inconsequetial?
