OK- do you all feel your parents were overprotective of you? Did one
of them stay home to take care of you instead of working? Or were you
pretty much allowed to be a kid? I’m paraniod I’m getting too
overprotective LOL.
And I am full of them, let me tell ya! Here is just one- did you have
a hard time having diabetes as a teenager? I hear all kinds of horror
stories, just wanted to know from some people who have been there and
survived. I realize it is important to fit in at that age, but how
much does diabetes interfere with that?
Found this at the JDF site- thought it was interesting. I have also
recently read an article about a new ecapsulation that has worked in
mice which protects transplanted islet cells from the immune system,
meaning there is no need for immunosuppressants.
Update: JDRF Harvard Center’s Third Year Advances Islet
Transplantation
New York City, October 17, 2001 Bolstered by the success of the
Edmonton protocol of 20 patients with type 1 diabetes who received
transplanted insulin-producing islet cells at the University of
Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, 80 percent have achieved independence
from the need for insulin injections for an entire year or more the
prospect of curing diabetes through islet transplantation holds great
promise. JDRF continues to provide strong support for speeding the
transition of islet cell transplantation from lab experiment to human
clinical trials. One institution at the forefront of this field is

Hi all! Sorry it’s been so long since I posted, but my son was in the
hospital all last week. He got pneumonia, which of course threw his
diabetes out of wack. The doctors were at a loss for a couple days
and finally actually put him on a all carb all the time diet! It felt
so wierd after 2 years to be begging him to eat cake, candy, etc.!
Basically, his ketones were so bad and the insulin wasn’t doing any
good that they decided to try this. Just is a bad omen for the year
to come- we are always in the hospital 3 times a year with pneumonia
or bronchitis, but this is WAY early in the season.
Anyway, hope
you are all well, and post sometime, huh? ![]()
By the way, (and this is another MS crossover) the medical center in
Omaha is doing a study where they basically kill off your immune
system with chemo and radiation, and then replace it with a healthy
one. So far they claim to be having success with this in MS patients,
so I wonder what about diabetes, or asthma for that matter? If anyone
is interested, they are going to be having a seminar about this on
Oct 18. I really wish I could go, but work and class are both
interfering that day. If anyone would like the info, post and I’ll
get it on here as soon as I can.
Just wanted to stop in and say that my hopes and prayers are with
everyone affected by these horrible acts committed against our
country.
