New to group
Hi everyone
I am new to the group and just wanted to introduce myself. I am not a
diabetic, my husband is.
It is not always easy to deal with, and I thought it would be nice to
have a support group so I know I’m not the only one going
through ’stuff’!
I havent read thru the messages, so dont know what all is going on
yet, but will check back often.

Hello,
I would like to introduce myself. I am 43, have had type1 since I
was 17, and have had various complications from it.
I look forward to meeting the group.

Hello All, happy to find a type 1 group! My boyfriend has type 1 and
on a pump. He still has out of control bg levels. Can’t seem to get
them to remaine constant more then a few hours. Also, he has missed
several days work due to highs & lows, and his employers don’t
understand that this is part of the diabetes. He can’t drive while
suger is at 30. And the highs make him sick. Does anyone have any
advice? I will have him join this group soon. Thanks for any / all
info you can give.

Welcome to the group! We have a few pumpers here who I hope can help
you, they are very helpful.

hey everyone, i’m new to this group. I’ve been a diabetic for 12
years. i’m really having a hard time managing it lately. i’m hoping
that being in contact with others will help. i just want to get into
good control and stop feeling like i’m 45 when i’m only 23…

Hi Bob, I’m Carol and have been diabetic since I was 28. I know what
it means to feel twenty years older than you really are. At 42, I feel
65. But…..I blame me. There are ways to achieve good control, it’s a
matter of going past the denial of the disease, following a meal plan
that suits you and most of all not wanting to end up blind or missing a
foot or leg or dying at too young of an age. I know it’s hard, hard,
hard to control! I am brittle and have many frustrating days!
What may work one day for me doesn’t work the next. Financially, it
can drain you as well with meds and supplies. I can tell you that at
23, you don’t want to be like me at 42. I have totally numb feet,
constant pain in both legs, a bladder that won’t empty completely due to
nerve damage, eye damage and I pray everyday that my kidneys don’t get
involved. When my bladder decided to go almost two years ago, I opened
my eyes and realized how stupid I had been. Always taking care of
everyone but me. I take insulin on a regular basis and do cheat every
so often, but I pay the price if I cheat too far. There’s a really good
magazine I get called Diabetes Self Management, it has alot of
informative articles as well as ideas and recipes. Also, you can order
books from the National Information Clearing House that will send you
several manuals for free. The number is 1-800-860-8747. They are good
for anybody, even children. They help to understand the outcome of
poorly controlled diabetes and give you ideas of better control.
I feel for the children I hear on here that have been recently
diagnosed. I have always felt like this was an unfair life sentence
until I realized I was making it that way. I have bad days and good
days but I don’t want anymore damage done to me than what has already
happened.
If you have a good endocrinologist then you are one up on me. There is
not one in my area.
But my PMD follows me and I have brought down my HbA1c to almost optimum
levels.
Please, Bob do what you can now to control your sugar. I have a son
almost your age and it would break my heart to know he was feeling ill
from this disease. At this point none of my kids have inherited this but
you never know. I have 3, I figure one will get it eventually. Mine
came from my mother and grandmother. If I can help you in any way, feel
free to email me at carol@…. I am always available since I can’t
hold down a job due to my health.
Take care,
Carol

Hi All,
I joined this group to try and help my neighbors. They are
devastated to learn that 2 of there boys have been diagnosed with
Juvenile diabetes type 1. One is 5 years old and the other is 11
years old. They said it is unusal for two brothers so far apart in
age to have this. They have another son who is 10 but does not have
it. They only learned of the diagnoses of both their sons last week.
This family dosen’t have any money, They also do not have a
computer. I am trying to help them by doing research.
The questions they have now are where can they buy special foods for
the kids with no carbs and no sugar?
My question is what should I be researching for them and how can I
help?
They are going to Texas Childrens Hospital and getting aide with
medicare so I am sure they are giving them good information. I just
don’t know what I can do to help and support them.
Any suggestions, support would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Kimberly

Hi

Hi Kimberly,
Please remember that those two boys are growing children and NEED carbs ! An Atkins type diet would be dangerous to say the least. I suggest you join the ADA email list and chat group on their behalf; remember reading somewhere there about financial support for medical treatment for those in need too. Good luck,

Hi everyone, I have been a type 1 diabetic now for 41 years. I feel
that i am pretty darn lucky because I have no major problems besides
this darn arthritis in my hands. I was recently placed on the
insulin Lantus. It seems to be working pretty good so far. I was on
Novolin and i just couldn’t keep my blood sugars down. My B.S.’s
would bounce all around. Like i said before, this Lantus seems to be
doing a good job of keeping my B.S.’s down. I am also on Humalog (3
injections of that a day). I attribute my good luck so far to
watching what I ate and seeing the Doctor every 3 months. I am
retired right now so, I don’t get too much exercise, just the honey
do things around the house. I found out I was diabetic when i was 21
years old, I tried to re-enlist in the Navy and they discovered that
I was a diabetic.
I hope that i can give some good advise to you all and visa-
versa. Good luck everyone.

Hello.
My name is Sarah, and my 13-year-old daughter was diagnosed with
Type I diabetes 4 weeks ago tomorrow. She is on humalog before
meals and Lantus at night. She really seems to be ‘honeymooning’
right now…down to 2U with breakfast, 4U with lunch, 3U with
dinner, and 9U Lantus at night.
I was wondering what kind of carbohydrate intake any of you might
share with me. Anne was started on 6 carbs with each meal, 1
afternoon snack and 1 evening snack. It really seemed to be too
much for her in that almost her *entire* intake was carbohydrate.
She’s down to 5 carbs each meal and two 1C snacks each day. What
are some of your diets like? Anne had lost ~7 pounds before
diagnosis, and has gained about 10 after starting insulin (she is
not overweight, but she’s not thin, either, and the extra weight is
disturbing to her). We meet tomorrow for our first follow-up at the
diabetic clinic.
I thought I’d put in my 2-cents worth about autoimmune disease,
also. Anne has OCD, which is believed to be auto-immune mediated in
some cases following strep(documented) or viral(theorized)
infections. Anne’s endocrinologist told us that if you have one
auto-immune disease, you are more prone to another….great :~\
Looking forward to learning lots. I’m glad I found this group-

Welcome! How old is your daughter, and what’s her name? I went thru
middle school, high school and college with type 1, so wherever she is
(excepting elementary school–I was diagnosed at age 12), I’ve also been
there! It’s rough, but us childhood-onsets who managed to adjust the best
have turned out stronger than you could perhaps imagine. Now in my 40th
year with diabetes, it’s been an odyssey I can tell you about from start to…
well, not finish–I ain’t finished yet!–but from start ’till now, at least!
You’ve
found a good buncha ppl here–some more newly diagnosed and seeking
support and answers, some, like me, old vets, survivors with a trick or 2 up our
sleeves.
Stay in the Light,
Michael

Good morning. I am new to the group but old to diabetes. Been type
1 for 42 years. I was 9 when I first learned to poke myself and
weigh everything that went into my mouth. Have been on the pump
(Minimed 712) for the past 5 1/2 years. Love it and you couldn’t
pry it off my body. A1c’s went from 7+% to 5.1% 6 months ago. Not
always that good though. Constant routine does it for me.

So nice to hear from someone who has “been there” and “done that”. I hope this group is what you are looking for.
Thanks for caring and sharing,

My 5 yr old son was diagnosed a little over a month ago with
diabetes. I think it is one of the biggest shocks to my life and his
both. I feel so bad for him sometimes, hes way stronger then me that
is for sure. He gets really upset sometimes because he feels like he
is the only diabetic kid out there. I explain there is others but
there isnt too many here. We live in a fairly small town. If anyone
has a child around his age that could help them type an email to my
son to let him know hes not alone would be great. Its a joy to know
there is a place to go that knows how it feels to deal with all of
the carb counting and emotions that come with this disease. Thanks
