Protests as death crash diabetic is cleared
By Stewart Payne

A diabetic who claimed his condition made him blameless for a crash
in which his high performance car veered out of control at more than
100mph, killing an oncoming motorist, was cleared by a jury yesterday.
The family of the man who died reacted angrily as Richard Turpin, 31,
was found not guilty of causing death by dangerous driving. No lesser
charge had been put.
Police supported the dead man’s widow in calling for mandatory blood
sugar tests for diabetics, every time they drive.
Turpin, a software product manager, said that he was in a
hypoglycemic trance, brought on by his condition, and remembered

hey everyone, kind of a funny/embarrasing question but i dont
where else or who else to ask it too…this is mainly directed
to the insulin pumpers on this board..im starting insulin
pump therapy on monday, the paradigm, and im developing some
major anxiety on what to do with the pump in scenarious of
sexual activity…im 22 and i live in new york city, so as
amoral as this may sound, hehe, not all of my sexual encounters
are involved in a relationship, and i just dont know how im
supposed to go about this issue…while being in the heat
of the moment, and im supposed to be like, “excuse me while
i disconnect…” or if im at a club and i get felt up and
my tubing gets caught in his hand. haaa, i know these scenarious
seem a bit ridiculous for some of you, but for me and my crazy
22 yr old manhatten life, theyre all but very realistic
any suggestions, advice??????????????????

Hello! I have had diabetes for twenty-one years and suffer from ESRD
as well as several other complications. One problem that I have is
Gustatory Sweating or Frey’s Syndrome. It’s a condition where you
sweat while eating. I would like to know if anyone else has this same
problem. Also, I am about to get on the insulin pump and I can’t
wait. Everyone says I will feel much better.
New York City, NY, June 19, 2002 JDRF has begun a new partnership
with two funding organizations in France to support three outstanding
research projects in that country, another example of JDRF increasing
its global presence to fund the best type 1 diabetes research in the
world.
Through the newly formed collaboration, JDRF is committing about $2.7
million to three diabetes-related research projects by leading
scientists in Paris, supplementing funds being supplied by Inserm,
the French Institute of Health and Medical Research, and FRM, a
French private foundation supporting medical research.
“These were three very strong grants, for which JDRF gets a great
deal on its investment,” says Robert Goldstein, M.D., Ph.D., Chief
Scientific Officer at JDRF. “It’s a chance to fund exceptional
science without JDRF bearing the entire financial commitment.”
The three projects approach type 1 diabetes through different

hi! i’m a new member. i’m 51, been diabetic all my life, take 6
shots per day using lantus and humalog now about 75 units per day.
used to take 150 units per day about 6 months ago. i’m thinking
about getting an insulin pump and have been reading up on it.
i’m concerned about how watertight the infusion sets are. i’m a
airchair hydrofoiler and am crashing from 8′ up in the air on the
lake water at 25 mph. will i have problems? anyone have the
paradigm minimed pump?
Hi all,
Well, Sarah’s appointment with the new endo went well yesterday. We are hoping, if all goes well, to have her pumping within the next few months. Sarah has a lot of proving of herself to do in the next few weeks — keeping very accurate record keeping, testing, counting carbs, etc. You all know the drill. This has been something that she’s not really been good at, so she knows that if she wants a pump, she has to prove that she is ready for the responsibility of a pump. She loved the new doc, right up to the point that Dr. Rathe sent us rushing to the surgeon downstairs — lol
Sarah has been complaining of pain below her tailbone for about a week and a half now. I coaxed her about a week ago to let me take a peek, but didn’t see anything remarkable. She has continued to complain about it though, and looked very uncomfortable. I thought perhaps she had a hemorrhoid or something. Well, yesterday before we were ready to leave the new doc, I said “Sarah would you please let Dr. Rathe take a quick peek at your bottom before we go?” Well, I got the death glare, of course. Explained it to the doc and she persuaded Sarah to let her take a peek if I left the room, which I did. So, I’m standing in the hallway and hear Dr. Rathe’s voice start to raise, and she gets this anxious sound, and says “Yes Sarah, this is serious, this could be life threatening,” and comes racing out the door and down the hall telling me she’s calling a surgeon. I about fainted right there in the hall — lol. Well, she was very concerned that this thing Sarah had below her
tailbone, right above where your buttocks start was now about the size of a hard boiled egg (the kid never, and I repeat never led me to believe it was THAT bad — arggh)! was perhaps a rectal abscess, which can turn septic, etc. So she immediately called the surgeon and sent us downstairs — quite prepared to end up in the hospital. Oh yeah, she got the play pump out and showed it to us AFTER all this surgeon talk — like who even digested a word she said after that???
So, off to the surgeon we go. Surgeon says he’s going to look at it, and see if he can “lance” it right there. Ok, so Sarah thinks “lancet” I can handle that. Well, he cuts about a 1 1/2 inch hold in her bum, squeezes what sarah says was a “gallon” of pus out of it, then packs it with gauze. This was not, she says, like “lancing” her finger — lol. Turns out it was something called a peri pylonidal cyst. She is in a tremendous amount of pain today, loving every minute of the painkiller Oxycodone. She’s stating that she is going to need “years and years of therapy” after going to a new endo to discuss the pump, and ending up at a surgeon’s office getting her “ass shredded.” That’s my Sarah, never a dull moment. But she’s doing well, and hopefully this thing will heal, and not reoccur.
Oh yeah, we also had tickets to Tim McGraw last night, and she simply was not going to miss this concert. She went, of course, all looped out on Oxycodone and miserable with pain, but she went, and had as good of a time as she could I suppose. I know Mom had a good time — that man is hot, hot, hot!
Well, that’s the update on Miss Sarah. Keep your fingers (and toes) crossed that we will be pumping soon!
All the best,
Kelly

I have no warning signs of hypoglicemia the only signs come in the
20’s or below when everyone around me notices strange behavior,my
brain slowly running out of sugar to operate.Istay on top of it by
testing regularly every 2 to 3 hours.I have to,I’m sure noone likes
losing an hour or so of there life or the 2 day “hangover” that comes
from it.It scares me always has,but now without the shakes it scares
me even more.My medic alert is tattooed on the back of my hand
because the police don’t look for the necklace or bracelet and for
some strange reason assume your drunk or on something.I’ve tried
keeping my blood sugars up around 180 but I go through high metobolic
rates where body burns sugars at a greater rate than normal at times
even with low activity
levels.

hey everyone, type 1 diabetic here of 9 months, wooohooo…
currently im vacationing in egypt, so im in a MUCH better mood than
ive been…must be the tropical climate and rum and diets
but ive been slightly depressed i suppose since diagnosis…however
im trying to get more positive…i just got approved and my insurance
agreed to pay in full for the paradigm insulin pump..im having a lot
of anxiety in thinking about being attached to it, but its comforting
to know that i can switch back and forth with my lantus and novolog
regime…my endo informed me of this and it made me feel a lot better
in making the decision to get the pump…im going to start using it
once i go back to the states..
my control overall is good…although slipping, my first hba1cs
were 6.7 and 6.4, and that was total hell achieving so now ive become
a more “realistic” diabetic and im happy if my levels stay under 200.
im not too unhappy being a diabetic, per say, i normally just have
