some relief from diabetes

Thursday, July 31st, 2003

although my wife and I do not have it, we do have a family history of
diabetes so we both take a special cranberry flavored liquid as a
health maintenance insurance.
Fred Smith and Carol Montenegro, two distant relatives, are finding
the product to be very helpful with their particular diabetes
challanges.

Looking for info for lil sis

Hi,
Has anyone here ever had the diabetes take a toll on someone’s
stomach? My little sister has been a Type 1 Diabetic since she was
10, she’s 16 now and only recently has started to take better care of
herself. Our Mom has done everything she could, but she could only
do so much. Bonni’s Hemoglobin A1c was 17 about 5 months or so ago,
it’s now down to about 11.5, which is still not great, but much
better and now she has developed problems with her stomach and
digestive tract. The GI dr said today, after an endoscopy, that her
stomach has quit working. The term is gastrophoresis and I’m doing a
search on it tonight as well, but from what I understand, the nerves
in her stomach, the vasa, and the vaga (maybe) have quit functioning,
so her stomach does not empty. We don’t know if there is any damage
to her intestines or not, but she has had a LOT of probs w/
constipation and has lost 15lb in 6wks that she couldn’t spare to

Hello!

Hi Everyone!
I’m new to the board, but not to diabetes. I was diagnosed 27 years
ago, at the age of 6. So many things have changed in the treatment
and management of diabetes since then (I can remember watching my
grandmother boil her syringes)! I am involved in the inhaled insulin
study now - and hope to help make this available to everyone soon.
Anyway - I’m glad to have found this message board, and look forward
to sharing information with everyone soon.

helpful books on diabetes?

Tuesday, July 29th, 2003

Hi,
I am 24 years old and have been diabetic since age 10. I was
wondering if anyone could suggest any book titles that my boyfriend
could read concerning diabetes. He has a basic understanding of the
disease, he does not need to really read about all of the symptoms,
treatments, etc. He wants to learn more about what I must deal with
everyday and I have not found any books that are really oriented just
towards the partners of type 1 diabetics. Thanks for any input!

Hello everyone,
My name is Penny. I have had diabetes for 16 years!
Tonight I went to my first support group meeting since I was a kid

this meeting?
thank you,

New to list & 2 diabetes

Saturday, July 26th, 2003

Maybe this is just me, but would a 2 year old be able to handle an unsulin pump? Does anyone know what the age should be for this? My daughter is 6, will be 7 Nov. 28th. She goes back to the dr the end of this month on October 30th. I am going to pose the question finally about a pump myself, and if nothing else definetly a 3rd shot a day since they only have her on 2. Theresa’s blood sugars were fine….. now the hypoglacemic episodes are starting to continue themselves on a more regular basis, I had to give her the glucose gel 4 times this month (which reminds me i need to go get more) and then this last few days, well actually this whole week, and she is not sick… out of nowhere she is having uncontrollable highs, even not eating that much. She gets so crabby and upset… since im her mom, she thinks I can save the world, and I have control over everything… so now it’s im not taking the blood test at the dr, why did you tell the dr I have to have shots, you gave me
diabetes… my god this is gonna depress me my whole life… I wish there was more I could do for her.. but everyday I tell myself the best things that I can do for her is to get her to manage her diabetes herself, and learn to trust her more… I have to watch her like a hawk though especially around new people so I know they dont sneak her things or give her things without realizing she cant have it. Also she is in first grade… I talked to her school about having a diabetes education in the multi-purpose room for all the kids ( like they have them about saving water, drugs) might help someone else, and the kids would know why theresa is different, there are 7 kids in her elementary school with diabetes type 1. And kids are always begging for her food, or offering her theirs, hell last week someone had the nerve to steal her lunch from her, ohhhhh i was mad. Its a small school they should have been able to track it down quick but of course didnt bother. So im at her
school every day at noon testing her BS b4 she eats lunch, and I keep my eye on kids. I try to get her to test in front of her friends, while i explain to them what im doing, why, and to not beg for her food that she needs it to live. and if they keep begging and/or sneak her food, that she can get really sick. Might have scared a few kids but shock therapys good if it works… ok im going to stop babbling now… this is a topic that really gets me going.

Hello everyone. I am new.

Friday, July 25th, 2003

Hi Everyone,
I am new to this list. I have had type one diabetes for almost 8
years. I am now 39 and I discovered something really cool. I hope
that this is okay to post this. I’m not trying to make big money or
anything like that, but I signed up to become a member of Shaklee. I
signed up because they sell a lot of cool cleaning products that are
really healthy for people and don’t damage the environment. I figured
with my autoimmune system, that’s not a bad thing! I had been using
the stuff for a long time and I figured why not sign up and get the
discount. Anyway, to make a long story short, Shaklee is known
worldwide for it’s great nutritional suppliments. I have been taking
their vitamins and stress suppliment and I felt better.
About two months ago, I started taking their glucose regulation
complex. It’s made for people like us with type one and type two
diabetes and people who are glucose intolerant. Anyway, I have had

new to list, and to diabetes

Thursday, July 24th, 2003

Hi, my name is Denice, and my two-year-old niece was diagnosed one
week ago with diabetes. This is all very new to our family. Right
now, my SIL is having a HORRIBLE time getting her to eat when and
what she is supposed to. (It’s hard to get a two-year-old to eat
anything sometimes!). They are looking into the pump. Do any of you
have any advice concerning the pump? They are trying to get her into
the Mayo clinic in MN to see a specialist there. ~ Also, any
suggestions of ways to get a two-year-old to eat the foods she’s
supposed to? Know of any sites that have creative ways of making fun
foods for diabetic children? Any help, advice, knowledge, etc. would
be SO appreciated!!
In Him,
Denice

Exercise study for Adolescents with Type 2 Diabetes

Sunday, July 20th, 2003

Minority adolescents suffering with type 2 Diabetes need your help!
Diabetes affects so many people that it is now classified as an
epidemic. To the individuals who suffer from it, the disease
increases the probability of complications such as problems with the
eyes, kidneys, and nerves as wells as increased blood pressure, heart
attacks and amputations. Minorities are at a higher risk of
developing the disease. At the moment more children are being
diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes. There is a study being conducted at
York College in Jamaica Queens, attempting to help afflicted
adolescents get better control of their diabetes. The details of
the study are as follows:
Purpose:
To study the effects of an exercise program on sugar metabolism,
body weigth, body fat and fitness level in adolescents with diabetes.
