Looking for info for lil sis
Hi,
Has anyone here ever had the diabetes take a toll on someone’s
stomach? My little sister has been a Type 1 Diabetic since she was
10, she’s 16 now and only recently has started to take better care of
herself. Our Mom has done everything she could, but she could only
do so much. Bonni’s Hemoglobin A1c was 17 about 5 months or so ago,
it’s now down to about 11.5, which is still not great, but much
better and now she has developed problems with her stomach and
digestive tract. The GI dr said today, after an endoscopy, that her
stomach has quit working. The term is gastrophoresis and I’m doing a
search on it tonight as well, but from what I understand, the nerves
in her stomach, the vasa, and the vaga (maybe) have quit functioning,
so her stomach does not empty. We don’t know if there is any damage
to her intestines or not, but she has had a LOT of probs w/
constipation and has lost 15lb in 6wks that she couldn’t spare to
begin with. She has been on Reglan since Fri, but it doesn’t appear
to be working, but maybe the dosage needs to be increased.
I don’t know, I just wish I could find someone who’s been thru this,
or another parent, just anyone who could maybe give us some hope,
and/or help us to prepare for what may lie ahead. We are also
concerned about her heart. It hasn’t been looked at yet, but her
resting pulse rate has been between 105 and 120 for about 4 days
straight now and it’s worrying us. She was sound asleep when the
nurse came in to take her vitals this evening and her pulse rate was
111.
