Moms with kids with diabetes?

Thursday, August 28th, 2003

Hi, I get such little mail from this group. How many moms with children with diabetes? My son was diagnosed just 2 months ago and he’s only 6, I could use some support if anyone is out there! I have so many questions, my head is still kind of spinning from all of this. Do I have to worry about the Nile virus from the mosquitos in the summer? The virus has gotten to be pretty bad, killing a few elderly people and it warns people with auto-immune diseases and young children, which is MY SON! So, I am worried. But then I thought of the diabetes camps they have for kids. I know they can’t be avoiding all mosquito bites.
Also, I worry about my son’s high blood levels taking a toll on him in his later years. When he has a high food reading, can’t that still be bad for him over the years? Right now he’s only on 5 units of cloudy in the mornings (he’s still in the honeymoon period) so times like last night after supper (pasta) he was still way over 200 at 11pm! I should have given him 1 unit of clear but he still brings himself down overnight to really good normal levels, often in the 60’s. He was taking clear insulin in the evenings especially when he didn’t exercise much during the day which he hadn’t. But since he was getting pretty low in the night the Diabetes educator took him off the insulin at night altogether. So last night he was high for several hours.
Any suggestions? Thanks, Benita

connection btwn heavy metals and diabetes?

Thursday, August 28th, 2003

Hi I am new to this group.. and I dont have diabetes…I have a
friend who does and hes not online.. I am looking to see if anyone
here has ever heard that heavy metal toxicity (lead mercury iron ect)
can be an underlying cause to diabetes….. just looking for
confirmation…
I have a 3yr old that is now autistic because of this very thing…
the metals came from vaccinations… in my research online I ran
across a research paper that indicated that heavy metals toxicity can
also cause diabetes too…I cannot remember where is was though..
(been a while).( I am sure that this is not the only cause, but one
of many) I am usually on the recovered kids group…which is part of
where I am learning about the things Im going to tell you below.
However if someone out there knows this to be true about heavy
metals toxicity and diabetes..could you please verify it? Feel free
to email me too. Also if anyone is intrested… There is help for

Pump expenses

Saturday, August 23rd, 2003

Hi, I’m hoping someone here can help me. My son is going to go on
the pump in a couple of weeks. We have the pump and what should be,
I suppose, a month’s worth of supplies. The problem is, we have to
sign up for my husband’s insurance before we actually start using the
pump. We’d like to sign up for an account where we can put away pre-
tax dollars to pay for my son’s prescriptions. We’ll have to pay $20
plus 20% of each prescription, not to exceed $50 per prescription.
Can anyone who’s pumping give me an idea of how much we might spend
on pumping supplies per month? Thanks in advance for any help you
can give.

Dr. Bernstein??

Monday, August 18th, 2003

Hi, anyone in NY state?
Has anyone heard of the Dr. Bernstein book? People highly recommend it on my other diabetes list (a lot of them are type 2) but my diabetes educator told me not to get it that it’s horrible advice for a type 1 child. Dr. B. recommends a low carb diet and my D.E. said that can damage his kidneys and stunt his growth. So, now I’m really confused but will be going with my D. E. since this is the team that I see.

pumps for kids (hi jerry)

Sunday, August 17th, 2003

Jerry,
I would prefer my daughter was on the pump, but I dont know how to make her doctors realize that it’s a need for her. I went in with the ultamadem to them on 10/30/02 that I wanted her either on lantus, or the pump, and like I said in my previous note that the doctors blew both ideas out without even giving me a chance.
The last time she had seen the dr. prior to 10/30 was 9/4/02 where her hba1c was up to 9.0, up from 7.6 on 4/10/02. Well fortunately, scheduling her to be seen in 7 weeks from 9/4 instead of 12, on 10/30 her hba1c was down to 8.2. Still not the 7.6 that it was, but a good drop for a 7 week period, at least I think. The dr. requested that she be seen again in another 8 weeks, but the clinic said that all they could give me was 01/22/03 (about 11 weeks). Now tell me that one makes sense? Come back in 8 weeks, yet it’s not, it’s 11 weeks.
I had the same problem with my dr. last month. She wanted to see me in 2 weeks, and it was more like 3 1/2 till I got to see her again. And I’m going through an extremely high risk pregnancy right now. I’m due in late feb/early march. I have to go back next wednesday for another sonogram. And in 3 weeks I will start seeing a specialist rather then my primary dr I have been seeing up till now. I woke up in so much pain today, and couldn’t make it go away for anything. I ended up throwing up, and feel like I may be reaching for a bucket all day long, so I plan to take it easy although there is always so much to do. I’m practically living at my daughter’s school right now.
I take Theresa to school @ 8:15 (that means I wake up @ like 7). Ashley starts @ 8:15, and Theresa @ 8:30, granted ashley only makes it on time 3 out of 5 days right now with our hustling around in the morning. I dont know why K would start earlier then 1-6 anyways, that one still puzzles me. Anyways, I have to be back at the school @ 11:30 to pick up ashley who gets out @ 11:35 (which means I have to take Katherine my 4 year old with me, since I took my girls out of daycare. BECAUSE their was a boy in there touching my 4 year old and the daycare provider acted like it didn’t happen and if it did that she obviously didn’t care, when I was getting collaberating stories from all 3 of my girls, and one of my daughters was even having nightmares about the boy for a 2 week period, and if you can believe this my social worker tried to tell me I only pulled them out because I didn’t want the lady to talk about me, as if she ever had anything bad to say. She was making my
kids feel by telling on this boy that they were doing something wrong. I’ll be damned before anyone makes my kids feel like they cant tell on someone who is molesting them!) Anyways I get ashley from her class, and we walk to the office to sign in and get visitors passes. Then I take Ashley & Katherine to the cafeteria to go eat lunch (they wont let me buy lunch, which I think is stupid, they would make an extra $10 a week off me, but oh well) We wait till 12-12:15 when Theresa gets her lunch, and sits with us. Then I have Theresa test her sugar first thing, and I stay there with her until she finishes her lunch, which is usually around 12:45-1:00. Fortunately my neighbor who’s daughter was in Theresa’s K, and is also now in her 1st grade class this year picks up Theresa with her daughter Joanna for me @ 2:50 and drops her off at my house. Benifits of that too being we can trade off who plays at who’s house, and where the homework is done each day after school, and it
benifits us all.
Here is another INTERESTING update — I guess the school spent 3 hours trying to call me last week. I was out shopping for Theresa’s birthday which is 11/28 (yes on turkey day this year) I came home to get her tester, and saw their were messages. My husband was the last person to call, so I called him @ work, and he said the school called Theresa passed out. I dropped the phone and flew to the school which is fortunately only 3 blocks away. (granted I have to carry our cell phone with us now anytime I will be away from the house for more then 30 minutes, otherwise I would be worried to death) I get to the school where theresa’s BS is 39!! (mind you the school has dr’s orders and food with orders of what to do, and they dont! they spend the whole time trying to call me, and they have 7 other diabetic kids in their school!) Apparently Theresa told her teacher that I didn’t feed her breakfast (which I did, I guess she didn’t want to eat it. She tends to think she is
supposed to fast when her sugar is high, even after I give her a shot. Poor baby, we are trying to get her to understand better. And even though she swore up and down to me in the car that morning before I let her get out, that she had her snack in her backpack, it turns out that she left it at home. I did however give her a capri sun out of my trunk that morning (so they dont get drunk on a more frequent basis then they should I hide them there). I got bitched out by everyone at that school, even her teacher got up in my face accusing me of not feeding her, again 3 days after this incident she tried to tell me “Theresa said she didn’t have breakfast again today, what’s your problem”. And I said (trying to stay as calm as I could) Look, you are not there every morning, you dont see what happens you are just taking her word for it. I feed my daughter. I place food in front of her every day, and im sorry even if a child is diabetic, you cant force food down their throat. what
can you do ? I even allow her now to have small candies to take to school with her to raise her blood sugar knowing that might be the only thing she will eat, but that she has to have something so she doesnt get sick.
A few days ago, Theresa came in my room after school, holding up her snack bag and said mommy can I eat this now? I look and it’s the entire snack I had packed her for school, the juice, a mini slim jim, a few grapes, and a few crackers. I was like what?? Keep in mind when I tested her at lunchtime that day she was like 55, and she didn’t want to eat much of the school lunch, so I had to stay there and make her eat. And this is where she whines, says she is full, that I am the meanest mom ever, and she tries to run away from me, and front attitude to me. It is horrible. So I was wondering why on earth after the snack I packed her how she could possibly be at 55 when her snack is at 10-10:15 and her lunch is at noon. Well I had my answer, and she said “My teacher said we didn’t have time to eat our snack”. Well I dont know if that was true or not but you better believe I was on the phone extremely upset, especially after she had gotten in my face a few days earlier
trying to claim I dont feed her breakfast. So yesterday the vice principal calls me concerning the matter, and says that the teacher also cant make her eat, and that its state law the teacher must have her break and cant stand over theresa. And I said thats fine her are 2 ideas and you better do one. 1) After the break is over, the teacher needs to check theresa’s snack and make sure she ate it all, and if she didn’t allow her to eat it then. 2) Send her to the office at snack time every day to eat her snack until she gets in the habit of eating it. Neither hard things to do and both would work. I really think they expect me to hold her hand and stay in the classroom all day long as if I had no life. I love my daughter very much, and never want anything to happen to her, but be reasonable. We cant walk them every step of the way through life, and we know it.
Anyways, I better cut it here for now…. as I have to run to the bank, and drop my hubby off at work, will update more later. Take care Jerry. :) and thanks for your input.

pumps for children (benita)

Tuesday, August 12th, 2003

Benita,
My daughter saw her endo again on october 30th, mind you she is 6, will be 7 nov 28th and was diagnosed with diabetes at age 5 on nov 26th 2000. I asked about the pump or even lantus for her, and they upped her nph by 1 unit each morning. They threw out the lantus idea by saying they didnt think she was “stable” enough for it yet, and they threw out the idea of the pump by saying that it is recommended that children be at least 10 years old to be on the pump so they are more independantly in control of their diabetes, and can handle it better. Although I know of a 2 year old on it. Keep in mind though, it’s a needle in you all the time, and I dont know of a kid who would choose it if they had the choice. Stay strong. Take care!

Hi Benita!

Thursday, August 7th, 2003

Benita,
Slow down! There is no way you can learn everything in a month, this month will mark 2 years since my daughter’s diagnosis. She was diagnosed right before her 5th birthday, she is about to be 7. And you know what, I still dont know everything, and I probably never will. No matter how much it will hurt you, it’s trial and error, and basically using your child as a guinea pig till you figure out what works best, at that time, and the possibility of it not always working, and having to switch.
The book that has always been recommended to me is the pink panther book. Other then that I recommend the camps as soon as possible, and looking into support groups in your area for your son, not for you. Our children must know that there are other people in this world who share their suffering from this horrible disease. They are far from alone, as diabetes is the #1 disease that insurance companies have to pay for each year.
Best of luck, and dont torment yourself. One thing I had to learn is you can get diabetes under control, and then not be able to control it at all. Anything & Everything can trigger #’s up and down. So take it one day at a time. Best of luck!
Angela
