Hi, Benita,
I've heard great things about Dr. Bernstein's ideas from people
who have put them into pratice, and some bad things about him
from people who haven't tried it. It seems to me like it would
complicate my life more than it already is.
A book that is more universally accepted as good advice is John
Walsh's "Stop the Roller Coaster." I looked it up, and it turns out
it is out of print. Two new books take its place, "Pumping Insulin"
and "Using Insulin." I think Walsh recommends pumps, but
"Using Insulin" is for diabetics who are not on a pump.

I'll be getting the Pink Pather book soon, I've heard a lot about it.
I'm finding myself really aggravated that so many people think type 1 and 2 are the same even tho I didn't know what it was a couple months ago!!!! I guess I only get annoyed when they say dumb things like "he can outgrow it, right", etc.
Benita

There is a good book out for newly diagnosed diabetics with the Pink Panther as the "mascot" of the book. It is simple and easy to read. We ALL read the book. Even the son who is not diabetic. It gives a good overview of various treatments and explains exactly what the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes are. Some people think they are the same thing~

Beth,
How long has your son had diabetes? Also, I didn't know the testing strips can test for all that? As for as I know, ours only tests for keytones. How do you know if there's a little blood that you can't see in it? Thanks, Benita

Benita-My sone is a type 1 diabetic also. We try to limit carbs to 5-6 servings a day. That isnt as radical as many no carb diets. As far as stunting growth...I seriously doubt it. He is 13 and 6 foot 1 with a size 14 shoe. We check his urine with diabetic testing strips to make sure he isnt spilling sugar, ketones, glucose or blood in his urine. I guess you have to find what works best for your child
