Need some help with teen with diabetes
My son Brian was dx 5/02 He is not doing well with it at all. He
is 14. (The honeymoon wore off in sept.) We are sending him to
diabetes camp next weekend. 7/27 He is very mad at us about it but
the dr says he really needs to go. Anyone have anything to say about
the camps? Are they good? Helpful?
He uses humilun and humalog, twice a day. He has been hospitalized
5 times since he was 5/02. His A1C in June was 12. Not good at all
but at least it was on the chart this time. We have to give him his
shots but when he stays with friends he comes home high and doesn’t
take his blood sugars. How do you make him do the things he is
suppose to without making the diabetes who he is? If we punish him
for not taking his bg then to him we are punishing him for having
diabetes.( like not letting him stay the night with friends, etc.)
Do or have any of you experienced this? How did or do you handle
it? We have him in counseling but he refuses to talk to him, says
we are making him differnt because he has diabetes. He uses alot of
guilt on us incase you couldn’t tell.
Brian refuses to even talk about the pump and his diabetes is to
out of control for the drs to even talk to us bout either.
Here is something else we have trouble with also. When Brian takes
his shots anywhere except his arms his sugar runs high. When we do
it in his arms it is lower. Has anyone else ran across this?
No one else in our family has this so we are on our own when we try
to figure this stuff out. Also the endo is 2 hours away from us so
that doesn’t help either.
Well sorry this is so long, I am really at a loss with Brian and
could really use any advice anyone has.
