need some help for teen with diabetes
Ahhh… I can’t wait to see the replies to this. I am soon to be dealing
with the same type of child I believe. My son (10) is newly dx (6 weeks
now) and is going to be the exact same way. He leaves his monitor all over
the place, forgets his insulin, sneaks food, makes up blood sugar levels,
etc. Somehow when we went for his A1C last week (his first one) it was only
7. When he went into the hospital with the dx his bg was 800 after not
eating for almost 24 hours. What do we do with these guys? I want to hear
from the parents of some problem children! lol
Good luck with your kiddo, I don’t have a bit of advice for you other than
saying that the diabetes is his responsibility and he needs to deal with it
or not be able to go do the neat things he wants to do. If mine forgets
his monitor somewhere but wants to go out the next morning, obviously he
can’t go because he can’t test while he is out. If he doesn’t do his
insulin until noon the he can’t go to dinner with his buddy at 6 because his
shot would be too early in the evening, etc. I use it as subtly as I can,
almost in the background. Not making a huge deal out of it (not while hes
around, at least!) but making it clear that it’s his job and it may be
“unfair” and everything else but it’s going to be this way for a long time
and he needs to get used to being the responsible one for it. He doesn’t do
his own shots yet but I’m sure that will be even more fun.
Regardless, I wish you luck, and am waiting to hear the replies that
actually *are* useful to you. lol
