Looking for info/input on Lantus

Tuesday, December 30th, 2003

Hi. My daughter was dx in May ‘03 and has been doing Humalog and
Humalin NPH. Yesterday at the endo’s, the doctor switched her to
Lantus. We can start using this now at any time. I am looking for
anyone who can share their insight/experiences with Lantus. She will
still be on the Humalog to cover her carbs. From what I understand
about the sensitivity factor, is that every time she is close to 200
or over, we substract 150 and that gives us a number, which we divide
by 50, and give her that amount (1H to every 50) plus the amount of H
to cover her carbs. I’m scared that before we make adjustments, I
might give her too much and she’ll drop. She will be on 20 units of
Lantus at bedtime. Would you say that this is worth giving it
a “shot”?? Also, she would now be doing a lunch shot in school, where
before she didn’t have to do worry about a lunch shot.
Thank you.

Hiya Everyone

Tuesday, December 30th, 2003

I’ve just joined this group and i thought i should say hello and
introduce myself.
I’m Samantha and i’m 28 from the UK. I have had type 1 diabetes now
for roughly 27 years. I was diagnosed when i was 14 months old. I’m
currently on 4 injections a day, Novorapid during the day and Lantus
(Glargine)before i go to bed. I’m also on a 2 week trial on the pump,
i only have saline solution pumping into me at the moment but i
change to insulin on the 11th November. So far the trial is going
very well and i can already see the benfits of being on a pump. The
model i’m using is the MiniMed Paradigm. My diabetes control is
pretty good but of course there is always room for inprovement,
hopefully that will come when i start using mypump with insulin.
I joined this group because i wanted to chat with people in the same
situation as myself. Anyway i’ll leave it there for now, don’t want
to bore you all to death :) Look forward to posting here more.

Lantus question

Saturday, December 27th, 2003

We are using Lantus for the night time 24hr shot. We were told once
you open the bottle, you have to discard the extra after one month.
Is there a specific reason to do this or can I keep it longer. If I
throw it out after the month, I will waste 2/3 of the bottle. I keep
it in the refrigerator in the box. I was just wondering why you need
to throw it out that soon. If there are any suggestions out there, I
would appreciate the advice. Thanks.

Just joined looking for info.

Hello all,
I have been A type 1 diabetic(juvenile onset) for 12 years now. The
only other person in my family that I know of that has had diabetes
is my grandmother. She was diagnosed the same year I was. She passed
away from complications in January of 1999. Well I’m now 24, and
still a brittle diabetic. I was on Regular and NPH for a while and my
body seemed to develop an insulin resistance to it. So I was switched
to Humalog and Lantus which is working fine now, but I’m still having
my bad days. So what I was asking is if anyone out there has had
anything bad happen with an insulin pump. The doctor has thought
about putting me on one, I would like it to free me up from 4
injections a day, but need to know if there are any bad side effects
or problems from using an insulin pump? Any response is helpful.
Email is stpatrick79@… . Thanks.

Thank you!

I wanted to thank those who replied so far. Stacy, thanks for the
words of encouragement. I know what you mean about not
saying “can’t”. We always say you have to try first before you say
you can’t do something. I am happy to hear that the way he is
getting his shots seems pretty normal. He is actually doing great -
the next goal is for him to do his own shot at lunch so I do not have
to go home everyday. We have not even talked about the pump yet. I
think he may be too young yet. Perhaps in the next couple of years.
I have checked the information on the one site children with
diabetes - that one is good too. This seems a little more personal.
Thanks again and keep this great site going!!

Looking for support - new to group!

Sunday, December 21st, 2003

Hello out there!! My name is Diane and my son Jason was diagnosed 3
weeks ago with type I. He is almost 5 and it has been quite a time
over the last few weeks. He started doing his own blood sugar at
about 1 1/2 weeks in. Boy did that help take some of the stress
out. He is doing great with the shots now - usually just laughs at
me!! One of my main questions is that he is on 4 shots per day, is
this the norm? The Novolog pen for the meal surges(3 times per day)
and then Lantis at night. Now that he seems to be more accepting, it
is easier. I did not know if this is the treatment for younger
patients because my nephew does the 2 shots per day and that is it.
Oh well - I am rambling - thanks for the great group - I have been
reading the messages and finding lots of great information. Have a
good day and thanks in advance for any information given.
Diane
One day at a time!! :)

Suprise Diagnoses

Thursday, December 18th, 2003

Hey everyone, I found this group looking for sites about diabetes,
in particular Type I. I was diagnosed at the beginning of August
this year at the age of 41, 5 weeks after having my thyroid abliated
for Graves. Has anyone heard of a simular circumstance? I just
switched my N to Lantis and am now using the pen.

Hi - I’m a Mom of a Son, Age 23 who was diagnosed at 9 months of age

Dear Everyone,
Thank you for setting up this group. My name is Roberta and I am a 50
year old mother and grandmother from New York. My son, Adam (also
known as A.J.) was born May, 1980; he was diagnosed with IDDM
February 17, 1981 (my how we all remember these types of dates). He
is now 23 years old and the father of a son, Jaden with a very rare
disorder called Pallister-Killian Mosaic Syndrome (no, its not due to
Adam or Crystal - there’s no apparent reason for this syndrome, it
just happens, but rarely).
I want to correspond with those that might need positive
reinforcement; A. J. was a star soccer player while growing up (he
played for the state Jr. Olympic Team and at age 15 played soccer in
Europe). I am also a volunteer NYS Certified Emergency Technician.
When A. J. was diagnosed, I felt very alone. I contacted the
Juvenile Diabetes Foundation at the time. Everyone wanted to raise

Diabetic since 1988

Saturday, December 13th, 2003

Hi everyone, My name is Carol and I have been a diabetic since I was
22. It was not diagnosed until I was 28. Does anyone else here have
a bladder condition known as Interstitial Cystitis? Or just suffer
from chronic bladder infections?
Also, do you find that physician’s have no patience with you at all?
Write me, I’d love to hear from anyone who is having trouble coping
with dr.’s that don’t want to help you and think that you don’t
control your sugar so you have various health problems because of it.
My email is carol@….
Thanks,
Carol
