Looking for support - new to group!
Hello out there!! My name is Diane and my son Jason was diagnosed 3
weeks ago with type I. He is almost 5 and it has been quite a time
over the last few weeks. He started doing his own blood sugar at
about 1 1/2 weeks in. Boy did that help take some of the stress
out. He is doing great with the shots now - usually just laughs at
me!! One of my main questions is that he is on 4 shots per day, is
this the norm? The Novolog pen for the meal surges(3 times per day)
and then Lantis at night. Now that he seems to be more accepting, it
is easier. I did not know if this is the treatment for younger
patients because my nephew does the 2 shots per day and that is it.
Oh well - I am rambling - thanks for the great group - I have been
reading the messages and finding lots of great information. Have a
good day and thanks in advance for any information given.

Diane,
Welcome! I have been insulin dependent for almost 27 years, and I am on the same regimen as your son. I don’t know if this is the norm for patients his age, but I have found that it offers much better flexibility for sick days, etc. When I was your son’s age, I took 1 shot every day, NPH only. I later moved to 2 shots, mixing NPH & Regular. A year & a half ago, I was switched to the 3 shots of Novolog & 1 shot of Lantus. I did try the pump at one point, but had a bad experience with it, so I went back to my shots. I will most likely try it again, but not just yet. Anyway, I wish you & your son all the best. I know it is a lot to deal with, but I hope that you are able to help him understand that it is NOT a disability (a pain in the backside, maybe
No pun intended). I keep hearing about what we are being told that we CAN’T do, often when it is something that we really CAN. I had always been told that I couldn’t get a private pilot license because I’m insulin
dependent, but that is just not true. I am starting flying lessons thanks to hearing about a guy named Michael Hunter. He’s a competitive aerobatic pilot & insulin dependent too!! He’s got a non profit group called Flight for Diabetes (www.flightfordiabetes.com) that is trying to get the message out to type 1’s that being diabetic isn’t as limiting as everybody seems to think. Anyway, now I’m rambling….sorry…:-) Best wishes!
Stacy

Tami,
I’m glad to hear that Jessica had a good day. I know I still like to get a “pat on the back” when I’m having a good day! I regularly get headaches after having low sugar counts. It usually his about 30 minutes after my count comes back up. I don’t know if anyone else gets this. They’re usually not too bad, just annoying. It sounds like you two have come through a particularly rough time. Congratulations on that! Keep us posted & tell Jessica we’re all rooting for her!!

welcome to everyone!!!!
My daughter Jessica was diagnosed about 3 weeks ago, She is 11 years old.
She got her tonsils out on July 24th and from then on….she didnt heal or begin to get better,..she also lost 25 lbs in that period of time…then 3 weeks ago I took her to the ER and they did a blood test and her level was 614….She was hospitalizied for 1 week. We are doing better each day…..its definaltley a day at a time thing!!!!.YEsterday she went to school all day and her sugar level stayed in the 100’s all day….that was the best day in weeks!!!!she was getting highs and lows in a day that made her get headaches, but so far so good….
lets keep in touch…its so hard to do this alone…..it helps so much to be able to share our experiences with each other,,,,,,that gives me hope!!!!! thanks, Tami and Jessica

i just started taking lantis, and it is my understanding that it works for 24 hours, kind of like a basil rate. then when you eat meals, you need a shot for the meal surges, i take humalog for those. so i think 4 shots is normal for that type of insulin. i’m JUST starting to get under control for the first time in about 5 years… my sugars have come down from being steady at around 230 to now at about 150. in the next week i’m hoping to be normal. but it’s playing hectic with my eyes right now. thanks for the support from everyone else that i chatted with before… i’ll update you again soon!
