day 8

Tuesday, January 27th, 2004

Well my father has eaten a loaf of rye bread in the past two days
along with four english muffins and two wraps. We’ve gone threw a
pound of butter in the past week. He says he’s always hungry so he
wants to increase his insulin to try to control his numbers better
Todays sugar readings were 272 273 and 388 at dinner. I told him
he should cut back his eating in order to regulate the sugar but he
doens’t listen to me.

A homeschoolers survey!

Monday, January 26th, 2004

Hi every one!
I home school my daughter because of her Diabetes.
Recently, the diabetes is affecting her thyroid which caused us a 3
day stay in the hospital. I am unemployed due to the lack of care in
the school system, hence my decision to home school her. Now, I have
been trying to find other families just like mine, single parent with
the other parent absent, and little help from family. My ex’s family
has decided not to be a part of my childs life due to the fear of
hurting her with her diabetes. So I created a survey to find other
families like mine and talk. Please take a few minutes to take the
survey. Let all your friends know too!! I appreciate it!!

Type I and Kids

Wednesday, January 21st, 2004

Hi,
I am 34 years old and have been Type I since past 5 years now.
I was diagonized as Type I in 1998. My wife is fine and does not have
any problems. I and my wife plan to have kids, but we have been
avoiding it for the last four years.
My questions are:
1) How likely is it that we may have kids born with Type I ?
2) How likely is it that we may have kids born with Type II ?
3) If we wait any longer, will the chances increase that my kids may
be born with Diabetes ?
Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You.

Hello everyone.

Saturday, January 17th, 2004

I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes on May 17, 2002. I was 26
years old. I was in the U.S. Navy at the time. On May 22, 2003, I was
medically retired from the military.
I currently take Lantus at bedtime, and Novolog for meals and
corrections. I use the Novolog Flexpen.
Lately I have been taking alot of correction doses. It is very
frustrating. I try to keep a level head and be analytical, but that
can be hard at times. In fact, a few minutes ago I was going to eat
lunch. I checked my sugar, and it was 182. That was at 1:10pm PST. At
noon it was 146 and I took two units of novolog. All I had between
the two tests was some coffee with powdered cream and Sweet&Low. I
don’t understand the rise from 146 to 182. After the 182 reading I
took another two units. I was so mad I almost threw my meter at the
wall. I WOULD like to eat sometime today.
Anyway, I just joined this group. I’m hoping to get advice from

personal story

Tuesday, January 13th, 2004

I have a personal story I want to share with everyone. I think you be
moved by it.
About 8 months ago my friend Jen, who is a diabetic, went into the
hospital because her blood sugar was out of control. She was having
cramps, headache, and the whole nine yards. It was not a good time
for her, her family or me. I felt really helpless. The doctors tried
to control her insulin level, but had no success. They couldn’t
explain why. Needless to say, I wasn’t happy with the doctors. OK, I
hated them. For a while we thought that she wasn’t going to make it.
It was hard to sit there and watch my friend deteriorate and not be
able to do something for her.
Then I ran into a friend who told me about a product called E7. My
friend told me how it has helped other diabetics by cutting their
insulin use almost in half. At first I didn’t think much about the
product because the doctors tried everything they know and nothing

Trouble with Lantus insulin

Saturday, January 10th, 2004

Last month ( 4 full weeks ago) my 14 year old started using lantus
and the novalog pen. We started with 24U of Lantus at night and 1-2
units per carb at meals. It has been disasterous. He truly doenst
cheat on his food or insulin. His blood sugars are rarely below 200
and usually hover more towards 300. I upped the Lantus at night
Gradually to 40 units and the novalog to 2 units per 15 grams of
carbs. Nothing had seemed to help. Yesterday we pitched the lantus
and the novalog and went back to NPH and reglar (20N 10R) at both
730 am and 430 pm. His blood sugars yesterday and today have
consistently been right at 100. He feels better and has more energy
also.Has anyone else had similar trouble with the Lantus novalog
combo? We go back to the Dr in January and will stay with the 2
shots per day as opposed to at least 4 of the other. I would like
feedback from others. My son was diagnosed in June of 2002 and has
went from a Hgb A1c of 14 down to 6 last visit.

NPH and tremors?

Wednesday, January 7th, 2004

Anyone else on NPH have hand tremors (like when BG is low, only ALL
the time)? Just wondering- my son has had these tremors for years,
and we can’t exactly remeber whether they started before or after the
diabetes. The docs always blow me off and say it’s from his asthma
meds, but he has them even when he isn’t taking his asthma meds. An
IM doc from Iran that I work with suggested it could be the NPH.
Anyway, this is another thing I’m going to address at my son’s
physical, and if I don’t get any answers, I guess I’ll have to call
my neurologist and ask her for help.
Thanks!

Cholesterol Lowering Drugs

Tuesday, January 6th, 2004

Do any of you have to take cholesterol drugs in addition to the
diabetes? Last year I was diagnosed with a genetic cholesterol
disease, and I’m taking my son in on Mon. for a physical, I’m going
to have them check him. I just read a study where they tried some
kids on Lipitor with my condition, and it worked for the cholesterol.
The thing I’m wondering though is it also lowers serum triglycerides
(mine were 600+, normal is 200), which are a precursor to glucose
manufacture, so IF he has this, will Lipitor totally mess with his
BG’s?
Thanks!
Melissa
