I just have a quick question to the group…..

With the Atkins diet has come about the net carb issue. I believe it is Carbs minus fiber equals net carbs. Those are the carbs they count.

I asked the dietician about this who in turn asked a colleague. They told me to count all carbs. My concern was there were things my son was eating that were high in fiber but we counted full carbs. If we hadn’t, his numbers would have really been out of control.

Does anyone have any thoughts? Am I thinking too deep on this?

My boss is following the low carb diet and he had today a low carb “candy” bar I believe called Power Bar. Which had a net 2 carbs but a full count of 30. I told him that my son would have to count the 30. He said on the package it stated that it was made with sugar alcohol. And that sugar alcohol has little affect on blood sugar. Again, any thoughts?

Thanks ahead of time as I sure appreciate the dialog here.

Thanks for that information. We have a local store that is VERY small which sells all items in bulk. It actually reminds me of many of the type of stores that the Amish buy their flour etc from. They also sell organic, etc things. As well as promote the Atkins products, etc.

I drove over there special to see what I could find for him in low carb things thinking I could get him more food for less carbs. Was I surprised to see the carb amount the same. Well, of course I found a couple of other things to buy and as I was checking out explained to the owner what I had come over for. And explained my surprise that there wasn’t much difference. She proceeded to tell me I was wrong and should only be counting the net carbs. I was so frustrated when I walked out of there, I have vowed never to go back, which I have not. Picked up some oatmeal that he hasn’t even tried yet. Took the label to our dietician and they basically said to count them as they are.

I have several friend who have lost weight on the Atkins diet, more power to them. I also have another friend who’s daughter is studying to be a dietician. A dietician’s scare is the liver has a hard time processing all the protein and could cause problems that way. So I still count as you said it Carbs as Carbs. There is no way we could count them any other way or I can’t imagine what his numbers would be like!!

    Thanks again!
