Dear Glenn, Welcome to the group. No, not being a cop or a bus driver would consider you as disabled. In fact, other than flying a plane, I don't know of any occupations in my state that you would not be a candidate for. My husband's ex-father-in-law drives a bus for schools. It's always been my practice in life that whenever I apply for a job, I state that I am a diabetic during the interview. You can not be discriminated against for this reason. As long as you can perform your duties and you maintain some sort of control, you can work just about anywhere. I have worked with paramedics that are diabetics as well. Chances are though, if you are not hired for a position you applied for, they may actually claim it's due to diabetes but they will never tell you that. I make sure they know I am well controlled and followed by a physician, I even offer a letter from my physician if they should need it. Don't get discouraged.
Diabetes is a disease but it's a manageable one that with proper management you can live your life just about like everyone. If you are having trouble maintaining control and being seen by a physician, maybe you should consult with another one. Your sugars can run high from stress, wrong meal planning, not enough insulin, and illness or infection.
Keep your chin up! You'll get it together eventually.

Take care,
Carol Cusick
