Sugar, mow much (was “question”)

Tuesday, March 9th, 2004

Morning Danna,

Uggggggggggggggh. Been there… well <gentle shrug

Lets be painfully clear here. ALWAYS treat the low FIRST!

“Protocol” says 15 grams, real world, TREAT first and afterwards, THEN find out where you/she is at. Doing it any other way is a dangerous thing, if you are alone!

< I just wasn’t sure what was the quickest thing to do…

Easiest to do is NORMAL SODA, period.

Second easiest in my experience is cake icing, but when confused and alone sometimes getting the top off can be a problem. It is an excellent method if you ever find someone unconscious all you got to do is stick it in their cheek, squeeze, and gently massage their cheek (from the outside btw). Voila, takes a few minutes but is the easiest to carry of all the stuff out there.

Its ALWAYS far better to play “catch up” with any bounce/rebound that might happen than to ever “crash”. Highs won’t harm you easily, lows can… and quick

another question

Monday, March 8th, 2004

Right now I’m checking my sugars 7-9 times a day. My fingers are getting really
tough. My “poker” has depth settings, and I’m turning it up every week or
so….but even though my fingers are tougher, it still hurts when it pokes
deeper. Does anyone know any tricks to keep that skin softer and well, thinner?
I tried vasoline on my hands at bedtime with socks over them to keep the
moisture in, but that didn’t work to well.
Ideas anyone?
Thanks,
Jenny

from low sugars to high

Sunday, March 7th, 2004

Carol talked about having a serious low to being 300. I know that experience
well. I always thought that I just couldn’t stop eating until my body felt
normal again. Then I read an article that said when you have a low, your liver
releases glycogen (I know I didn’t spell that right…) to counteract the low,
and sometimes this combined with the food saids you sky high. Then, when you
take insulin to bring yourself back down, your sugar drops again, and the cycle
start all over again. My doctor recammended that I wait about an hour to take
any insulin to give my body a chance to readjust.

I have a question that I can’t find the answer to in any of my diabetes ed
materials. When you sugars are low, what is the carb to sugal level ratio. In
other words, how many carbs to you eat to raise your sugar how much? Does this
make sense??

Diabetes Walk-a-thon

Thursday, March 4th, 2004

Hello,
I am a stepmother to a son diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 4 :-( At that time, his mother and father also divorced. I think this is
one of the strongest children that I have ever met!
I would like to make a difference so I want to walk in the diabetes
walk-a-thon and was wondering if anybody here would like to sponser
me. Even if it is $5.00, every bit helps. I want them to find a
cure for this nasty disease. I don’t know how you all can do it!
If you are interested in sponsering me or walking in the walk-a-thon,
they might be having it in your area. Go to www.walk.diabetes.org.
If you are willing to sponser me, my name is Lisa Marqueling and my
state is Indiana. They do take credit cards on the secure server on
the american diabetes site.
I wish every one of you well and God Bless! :-) Lisa Marqueling

Hi,
I just want to thank everyone here for all the support I’ve gotten in the short
time I’ve been here. I don’t know anyone personally with diabetes, so it’s nice
to have a place where I can vent and not be judged. There is one support group,
but with my social anxiety disorder, my doctor thinks that the stress of going
to it would overweigh the benefits.
So I’m doing what I can to make my own support group. I joined this group, and
I answered some of the submissions in the “making friends” section of Diabetes
Forecast. I also submitted my name to be included. Just want everyone to know
that I’m not just sitting back and feeling sorry for myself…I am activly
trying to get the support that I need.
Thanks again to all,
Jenny

quick p.s.

Forgot to add this to my previous message. I’m having a mild sick day…sore
throat and low grade fever, but I’ve been able to keep my sugars under 150. I’m
kinda proud of myself. :) Jenny
