I am a 51 yr old type 2 diabetic of 10 years, whose blood sugar levels
were between 120 and 330 when I was taking 4 X 2.5/500 Glucovance and
1 x 45mg of Actos daily, 4 months ago. My current 14 day average is
102 and my current 30 day average is 113. I am no longer tired and
lethargic all the time. In fact I have not felt better for years. My
new treatment regime is working - with reduced medication. However, I
am always looking for ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle and keep my
diabetes under control, so any suggestions are welcome.

Race to cure Diabetes

Saturday, October 23rd, 2004

Has anyone done that before? I am doing that November 6th( my
birthday) in the mornin. would it be a good idea to bring a snack
with me just in case my blood sugar gets low? I walked the other day
from my school down the road(it was probably 2 miles( to pick up my
car) and when I got in my car I knew I needed to get something to
eat and I did once I got home.
Thanks!

Insuline Question

[INLINE]
How come some people take a lot lower Dose of Lantus and others like me take 50 units at night? Is it the degree of weight, age, or what determines this? And why are a lot of people splitting it up? I have heard of a lot of people who do this.

What can we do about all the ads?

I love the group but lately all I get is “get out of debt” and “cheaper meds with us” advertisements.

Sleep Sentry: reply to Jeff

Wednesday, October 20th, 2004

Thanks, Jeff for your nice and humorous reply. Surely we are all
reluctant members to the same club! Just tonight I have learned more
about the sleep sentry. Jodie Foster’s daughter in the Panic
room movie had a glucowatch. Yes, it does have a prohibitive cost
for daily use. What I needed was an alarm to help me with glucose
unawareness. I get below 30 suddenly and sometimes the first warning
symptom is such mental confusion, I am powerless to know what I need
to do. Hopefully the sleep sentry will assist me in better
awareness. It alarms when you begin to sweat with perspiration or a
cold sweat when you temp drops 2 or more degrees. If you know snyone
who may need this item, it can be found on the internet under
Diabetes Sleep Sentry Products, Inc. I covet your prayers that this
will enable me to maintain self-sufficiency. Beverly

Megan

Hello Megan,

I’ve got 11 years on you (: z..

IMHO there is no “right”.. you work with the number you get, now. After 3 days hopefully you get a pattern. But you’ve been the same paths anyone our age has been. You probably remember when testing was done with urine (8 D. (I wish that had worked, I truly do,,,,,)

What kinds of things are happening? Lantus as you know doesn’t cover the promised 24 hrs… Mine lasts a total of 20 hrs. +/- and the research is pretty clear now that happens for most. They are reformulating the mixture, and are supposed to be coming out with a mixable short acting some point the next year too. My Md is trying to convince me to try novolog, simply because that pen doesn’t have the design flaw the Humalog pen does (requires excessive pressure to be certain to get the last few units out). Humalog doesn’t last quite as long either….

Want to chat? Maybe we all can figure something out….?

Advice for April

Monday, October 18th, 2004

Hello April,

Ok, IMHE-fwiw (in my humble experience -for whatever its worth) the regimene you are on is precisely the one most T1’s are on. Some people LOVE Humalog, others Humalin, others some other short acting insulins. Then you add in the long acting insulins for “complete coverage”. (The diabetic sugar fairies are giggling at this one). The endo is trying to get your numbers down SLOWLY. He/she could make your baseline 100 instead of 150, but that runs the risk of you bottoming out…. so to start they aim just slightly higher and if you get the desired patterns, then they’ll likely ~correct your aim~ for those last 50 points.

A1C’s are wonderful tests (they have accurate home versions too btw). But its an average, and only an average. Don’t sweat this single extra point… its a number and not a very high one either! Life is a stressful creature… and god knows diabetes is not a ~fun game~ in the least. What all of us are attempting to do as diabetics is play the “pancreas game”. In short as you probably realize we are aiming at simulating a pancreas via our injections, or pump, or pills. Unfortunately its not candyland. It will require a lot of laughter from you… a whole lot of patience and mostly PERSISTANCE.

Don’t get emotionally attached to the numbers or they will literally make you insane. Then the “sugar police” will come and lock you away in the padded room (Ever see the movie Panic Room <g

Does this help any?

Controlling Blood Sugars

Sunday, October 17th, 2004

Hi; I was just recently diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes(8-2-04). I
also suffer from PBC(primary biliary cirrosis) and hypothyrodism.
My question is controlling blood sugars. Since being diagnosed I
have been on several regimens of insulin and I’m currently on Lantus
and Novolog. My endocronologist raved about the results her
patients get with these two insulins but so far my results have not
improved! I take 40 units of Lantus at bedtime and dose with
Novolog when I eat and to correct any high readings. My doctor has
me taking 8 units of Novolog for each carbohydrate gram and when I’m
high she has me taking 1 unit of Novolog to bring the reading down
by 30. This formula is not working and my sugars range anywhere
from 37 up to the low 400’s. This is very frustrating to me but my
doctor assures me that eventually my levels will get better and it’s
just a slow process? Right now she has me aiming for a goal of 150
which according to all charts I’ve seen is still quite high. My A1C
(more…)
