lows and mess ups
Has anyone ever had a low happen at a really important time? For
example I had a low-ish episode happen at a job interview, that I of
course didnt get! After the interview my sugar was 68. What do you
do, I didnt want to excuse myself and say i needed to go get
something to eat/drink, I know in the future to eat before I go, but
has anyone else screwed up like this! Im so frustrated as i
desperatly wanted this job on campus!

I feel so bad for you. As a Mom I worry all the time about my daughter and try to foresee the future and avoid complications. But I know if it was me and my disease it would harder because we try to do so much and fit in just one more errand before lunch or eat just one more cookie at the office party, etc.
My advice would be to carry candy in your purse or backpack, or even sugary gum so you can pop it in your mouth without being to rude to the people you are talking to or come right out and tell them. I don’t know too many employers who would have a problem with honesty.
Good Luck in the future,

Hi, I’ve had spontaneous lows happen to me so I have learned that if I carry lifesavers and every half an hour pop one in my mouth, this keeps me from dropping suddenly. It actually keeps a baseline in place. But all diabetics are different in their daily routines so what works for me might not work for others. I try also to schedule things around my peak times so I have a chance to have a snack or eat when I have to. Hope this helps you out a little. I also make sure that before an interview, especially since you don’t know how long it will last that I am covered in some way with a soda. Carrying a candy bar or some type of soft candy can help also if it’s lengthy, just excuse yourself and go in the bathroom. I’ve done that before too. Usually, interviewers take no notice that you had to go to the bathroom, they know nature calls when it needs too! LOL!!
Take care,
Carol

I don’t know. I’ve never brought it up in an interview and never been asked, although I’ve been doing it for a while (28 years next month) and pretty much know what to expect. As for dating & other personal relationships, I’ve always been up front about it….ie: when out on a dinner date, I will let them know that I have to excuse myself for a shot, and I do my testing right at the table. I know….some folks don’t agree with that…..that is just me. I always figured, if they can’t deal with me as I am, then they are probably not the one for me. It’s not like I did the shots in front of them, but hey, it’s not like the diabetes was going anywhere. Seems to have worked out OK, though. My hubby & I have been married for 10 years now, & he knew what he was getting into from the start. Just my thoughts……

My sister doesn’t let people know right away at an interview or on
a date.
Is this a concern for others too, if people know your diabetic
things might be different?

Jennifer,
Very well said.
By the way, my husband, 23 years ago when we got married, tagged me with the pet name of “Sweet Pee.”
AND, I take my shot at the table, test at the table, etc. I am not going to a nasty old bathroom to do that anymore. Used to, but not for the last 10 years. If someone doesn’t like it, they can leave or look the other way.

Does anyone else ever have reactions without feeling them on the way? There are times I don’t have a clue, and that is when things go weird.
