Learning as I go along…Pump Info

Monday, May 30th, 2005

Thanks to everyone who responded to my post last night. I really
appreciate the advice.
I wanted to let some people know what I have found out so far
regarding the pump.
So far, I have learned the most about the pump from the pump
companies themselves. I have been researching them on the internet
and here are the websites for 2 of them:
Minimed.com (they also can mail you info to your home)
Animas.com
They seem to run about $6000 and I was told that health insurance
pays approx. 80% but some health insurance companies have a yearly
expense cap of $2000, leaving you with the balance.
I am hoping for 100% but won’t be too greedy. Will be more then
happy if I can get 80% paid.
Good luck with your diabetes adventures.

i need help

Friday, May 27th, 2005

for the past couple days i’ve really struggled with high numbers. tuesday i talked with my endocrinologist three times…for me, i was taking huge boluses; between 18-20 units every three hours. My insulin might as well have been water….it did nothing to bring my numbers down. i eventually ended up in the ER with iv fluids and some iv insulin. Got me down to 188 and sent me home. The next working I woke up at 441, spent most of the day in the 500s and was over 600 for a while. I went back to the ER where they did very little…they started an iv but never gave me any fluids. they gave me a little sub-q insulin. the er doc, who had a pump asked if she could borrow my pump while she talked to my endocrinologist. She came back later with two security guards. She had looked at my daily totals for the day before and determined my pump had been turned off. I know I must of done it, but I have absolutly no memory of doing it. I was working so hard to bring my sugars
down…and drinking so much water so I didn’t get dehydrated.

I took my pump off and said I didn’t want it anymore. I refused lantus. I was told I was on a 72 hour hold and I was going to get lantus, even if the security guards had to hold me down.

I’m scared and confused. I can’t see my psychiatrist until next week, and my depression is so heavy right now. what’s wrong with me??????????

Robby

, if you were implying that there are also ‘know it alls’ on this
list, you are off base. We are ALL LEARNING ALL THE TIME!!!! That’s what
these lists are for.
I’m glad to see you didn’t turn tail and run, it never hurts to listen
and take a little advice. I have a son your age and I must admit for as
proud of
him as I am, I know that his mentality level is way more advanced than
most young men his age. He is tactful, compassionate and not so quick to
think that others are trying to do him harm. Robby, you will never make
me believe that somewhere in that 125 lb. frame that there is not fears no
matter how confident you play off to be. We all have them thus we are
all human. Continue as you are, seems to be working fine for you. Just
remember,
everyone has a story to tell, some happy, some sad. We just want to
share what we have learned. I don’t think in any post to you that I said

dehydration and blood sugars

Sunday, May 22nd, 2005

Hi,
I have started attending yoga classes at Bikram Yoga recently. This is
a 90 min class in a room that is maintained at 110 F, and 60% humidity.
Lately, I have noticed that my blood sugars have been staying high. I
wonder if this could be due to the dehydration from all the sweating
in the class.
For a long time, my readings at lunch were the most predictable. I
would eat about 70 carbs at breakfast, take the required amount of H.
At lunch time, I would go back to where I started at fasting.
Now, however, my lunch time readings are pretty high. For example,
today, my fasting was 126, at lunch time it was 168. The past 2-3
days, my lunch time reading was much higher.
thanks

Pregnancy

Saturday, May 21st, 2005

I also have a question about pregnancy. I was told that I should not
get pregnant until i am completely and totally undercontrol. The doc
said that if my diabetes wasnt under control that i would have too
many complications with the pregnancy. How true is this and how do
they expect you to wait, somtimes it just happenes. Thanks

i’m back, to stay i hope

Friday, May 13th, 2005

i decided to come back. i left because it was really making me mad
how people were telling me that i was destined to die young, and get
horrible complications, etc. i’m not stupid. i know there is always a
chance that something could happen. i do know that i have fantastic
doctors and specialists that could catch that stuff early and put a
stop to it. i’m not really worried about myself ever getting heart
disease. i weigh 125 pounds. i am never worried about being
overweight. i went to the doctor today and my blood pressure was
120/70, which is great. i’m an active guy. i am not worried about
getting clogged arteries and having my pressure go above normal. i’m
also not worried about losing feeling in my legs or feet. if you saw
me you’d know why. i’m a skinny guy. plus, i dont smoke. kidney
disease doesnt run in our family. my grandma had it, but she had all
kinds of things wrong with her. thats the only person i can think of.
if anything started to happen with my kidneys, the doctors can take

Pump survey

Thursday, May 5th, 2005

Hello-
My daughter, now 14, was diagnosed with Type I diabetes in February
2004 (February 21 to be exact). She has done remarkably well on
Lantus and Humalog…(I wonder if she’s still ‘honeymooning’-1 unit
Humalog breakfast, 1 lunch, 2 dinner, and 6 Lantus). She is very
interested in the insulin pump and we are in the process of
evaluation for a pump. My questions are to anyone who is using or
has used a pump:
*What brand did you choose and why?
*Did you find any drawbacks to the pump? If so, what were they?
*What type of catheter device did you use and why?
*Any other words of wisdom?
I would appreciate any advice!
Thanks in advance-
Sarah(Ohio)
