Islet Cell Transplant
I don’t know if any of you know this, but the Islet Cell Transplant
cost $25,000 not covered by insurance. My husband and I looked into
it and we are still considering it. We would take out a loan for
the surgery. If this has changed or if any of you have additional
information about the financial side of this please let me know. I
know a woman that had diabetes. she had the pancreas/kidney
transplant and they had her on 36 rejection pills a day, she now
takes 18. With the islet cell transplant, you start off taking 5
rejection pills and then go to 2 for the rest of your life. it is
something to research, because as with having diabetes there are
risk to consider.

Jennifer,
The U of Wisconsin was wanting $32,000.00 for all the treatment involved, except lodging that was not incorporated into the transplant itself, travel to/from and the rejection meds. They would provide the pre-transplant testing, the transplant injections and follow-up. I looked into it, too, but want to be a nurse more than try something still unproven. If I were taking anti-rejection meds, the increase risk for infection would be too great to go and do what I love to do….

Jenny,
This one you pay for AFTER you are picked! I think it is the only way they can fund it. There are too many drug companies that don’t want this to work.
And why would you not qualify for a trial?
