artificial light & diabetes

Thursday, September 22nd, 2005

Hi all,
I was reading on the internet some very interesting articles on how
artificial light (especially fluorescent lights) may cause diabetes,
cancer, mental illness, infertility, heart disease etc. If you search
on the internet with ” artificial light, cancer” you may find a lot of
them.

Birthday Cake

Friday, September 9th, 2005

Hi Everyone,
We’re about to get pounded with snow up here in the northeast.
Yipee!!!!
Anyway, Maddie’s birthday is next week and I’m searching for a
birthday cake recipe that is diabetes friendly. I’ve thought of
going with the regular cake mixes that you buy in the store, and
making cupcakes with them, you can get about 24 cupcakes from them
and I belive that the carb count per cupcake (without icing) is about
18-19 grams, which would fit in for her snack count.
What do you other moms do out there?
Thanks,
Stephanie

Study: Insulin Pumps vs. Lantus

Thursday, September 8th, 2005

THIS IS GREAT INFORMATION FOR ANYONE INTERESTED IN THE INSULIN PUMP,
I FOUND THIS ARTICLE ONLINE. JENNIFER
First randomized, prospective study directly comparing insulin pumps
with LantusĀ® therapy in pediatric patients identifies pump therapy
as a more optimal treatment for blood sugar control
NORTHRIDGE, Calif., July 2, 2004 Results of a study published in
the July 2004 peer-reviewed issue of Diabetes Care confirm that
insulin pump therapy is a more optimal treatment in improving blood
sugar (glucose) levels in children and adolescents with type 1
diabetes than multiple daily injection therapy using long-acting
LantusĀ® insulin.
This first-ever randomized, 16-week prospective trial included 32
patients, and was conducted by investigators from Yale School of
Medicine. The study confirmed that pediatric patients using
Medtronic insulin pumps experienced a statistically significant

fruit smoothie

Wednesday, September 7th, 2005

i made a strawberrie smoothie this morning and it was good…i was
very surprised. after my diabetic friend died, i have been thinking
about what i can do differently to take better care of myself. my
A1c is 6.2…so my diabetes is doing great. but my body needs some
work. so i am going to start working out again with a good friend
of mine. she got on me about working out, and i started the day
with eating right. my breakfast smoothie= 6oz. light vanilla yogurt
(80 calories, 12 carbs, 6 proteins) 2/3 cup frozen strawberries
thawed (50 calories, 13 carbs, 0 protein) 2 scoopes whey protein
vanilla flavored (80 calories, 1 carb, 16 proteins) so my totals
for my great smoothie: 210 calories, 26 carbs and 22 proteins. i
used stevia sweetener, it is suppose to be good for diabetes,
something wuth release of insulin and body fat. i dont know i just
use it because it is suppose to better for diabetics. it can be
ordered online, but it is costly, like $6.99 for 100 packets. i am

Type 1’s & 2’s

Sunday, September 4th, 2005

Ok, I’m not an expert, just too curious for my own good, but this is my
take on what I have learned since my diagnosis as a Type 1 in 1988.
In all the time I have been diabetic, I have watched the signs, symptoms
and ages of onset change for Type 1 several times. In comparison, both
types share much of the same symptoms other than Type 1’s seem to go
into DKA faster and are sometimes very thin. They have found that you
don’t have to be extremely skinny to be a 1 and the onset now can be as
high as 50+ due to the failure of the pancreas to produce insulin. When
I was diagnosed, they didn’t do the C-peptide test. I have since had it
done and found that I do not produce any insulin at all. Most likely,
never did. The physician I worked for at the time I was diagnosed in
‘88′ started me on pills anyway because I was overweight and he was
certain I was Type 2 for that reason only. He was wrong. The pills did
nothing for me. Also, at that time oral meds had the long term effect of
causing heart disease so for that reason and family history, I bow down
