Becky went on the pen this past August, and we love them.  You don't have to measure out the dose in a syringe,  With the pen, you prime it, then shoot the dose.  Otherwise, it's basically the same as a syringe.  As to more or less painful, it should be about the same, Becky hasn't said one way or the other.  She does her shots in her tummy, says it doesn't hurt as bad as in the arm or leg.
