Husband Diagnosed

Monday, January 30th, 2006

Hello Jewl,

Ok, you get a lot of information over the next few weeks and months, lots here one hopes, lots from the medical professionals as well. There are all kinds of diabetes but boiled down the body is NOT functioning as it is supposed to. It is not producing a hormone called insulin which among its other many talents, turns the food we eat into energy the body can access. No insulin from the body and there is no access to the energy.

Let me try this metaphor:

The body is like a car. You put fuel into the car… no fuel, dead car, won’t run right? When he eats food, any food it goes into the “gas tank” and sits there… slowly being digested. Now, in order for your husband to use those nutrients, to get access to the energy he’s digested and is available in the gas tank… he must have insulin.

Insulin is literally the key which opens the valve and lets the engine HAVE the gas stored in the tank. WIthout the body producing insulin there is/are valves but they are literally welded shut.

Now regardless of which type of diabetes he turns out to have… your husband is pouring sludge, kerosene and as much crap food as he can get into that tank of his…. it stops NOW or his engine will seize up, and he’ll be dead not killed by diabetes very likely… but by a massive heart attack.

You get to join him in the healthy path. Toss out EVERY piece of junk food on the shelves, cakes, cookies, chips, pretzels, marshmallows, all the sodas EVERYTHING. I promise you it will be hard, make no mistake. But having any access to those foods makes it far too easy to just “…have one…” (yeah right, half the bag later…)

Remove them from reach and no more access to garbage.

HELP re: pens -Novalog v. Humalog

Monday, January 30th, 2006

Good Morning Folks :

Recently went to the Endo told her all the Humalog Insulin pens seemed to have a design-delivery problem. I’ve known for years, and wanted to know what they were doing about it… what they were telling her to do.
I tracked down a regional drug rep’s manager for the company and grilled them on the problem. Nada…

The endo suggested the NOVOlog pens did not have this delivery problem

(When pressing the HUMALOG pen’s plunger down for the last units, you must press FULL-force, for at least 2/3 seconds minimum in order to get ALL of the HUMALOG you dialed-up injected…, if not, you leave a measurable amount of Humalog UN-injected… which obviously is bad)

Has anybody (with some experience) on the list gone between these two pens/insulins (HUMALOG v. Novolog) had any SIGNIFICANT differences in dosage adjustment? Any differences at all?

I had to go special notice….again

Friday, January 27th, 2006

I feel like the world traveler this week. We returned from a long weekend in Florida Tuesday just to do laundry and head out to the hills of Northern Pa. tomorrow for our annual sledding trip with my parents.

Sorry if I have been lurking and not responding much, Special Notice doesn’t really keep me up to date. Email me privately if something super important happens.

Miss you all already!

Hugs, Rhonda

Any suggestions?

Thursday, January 26th, 2006

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what is causing Trevor’s
feet and legs to hurt so bad. He cant even make it through walmart,
he always ends up in the cart. I feel so bad, hes only 5yr old he
shouldnt be in so much pain when hes so young. Any suggestions on
the cause. I know diabetes can cause sore feet, guess I didnt know it
effected small children in this way.

Pros & Cons Of Pumps Verses Injections

Tuesday, January 24th, 2006

I am a fairly newly dx’d Type 1(Aug 04). I am currently using
injections(Lantus & Novolog). I am trying to make a decision as to
whether to try a pump or not. Have any of you gone from pumping
back to injections? What do you consider the pros in regards to
pumping and also the cons? How easy is it to learn everything you
need before using pump. Are any of you pumpers that have used other
pumps besides Mini Med; i.e. Animas? Do you consider using a pump
to be more of an intrusion to normalcy for day to day life(compared
to using injections using an insulin pen)?

Thanks…Pump Info

Monday, January 23rd, 2006

Thanks guys for the all the info. I think I will be getting my pump
by the end of the month, so I will let you know how it goes. Of
course, I keep thinking the inserting of the tube is going to
hurt…I’m such a wimp!
Goodnight, Evelyn :)

Pump Question

Sunday, January 22nd, 2006

Hi all,
I was curious if you have to check your blood sugar everytime before
you can eat when you are on the pump. I know the Minimed has a
glucose reader that sends your BSL to the pump in order for you to
get insulin. I already check my blood sugar 8 (maybe more) times a
day. On occasion, I would nibble shortly (30mins or so) after
checking and wouldn’t want to bother checking my BSL again before
giving myself a bolus through the pump. Thanks for any info…

bad pump day…

Friday, January 20th, 2006

Yesterday was a bad pump day. My sugars were high, high, high…off my meter (600+) high at one point. I was bolusing and taking injections every couple of hours. Finally I pulled my infusion set, only to find the canula was bent. No wonder I was having so many problems. I changed the set and took another injection for good measure and this morning was 58. Now, I get to school and realize that I left my meter at home. I need to get one to leave here and one to leave at home.

My question is…..shouldn’t my pump (minimed paradigm) been beeping at me cuz of the blocked insulin?

Natl Diab. Pharm

Monday, January 16th, 2006

Does anyone use the National Diabetic Pharmacy for their supplies? A
friend told me about this and I called today, I’m waiting to hear
back if I am eligible. I’ve heard it saves a bunch of money on your
supplies.

Low carb diet

Monday, January 16th, 2006

Hi, has anyone on here found that by following low carbs that their body
starts to act differently? On Jan. 27, I decided to lose some weight for
my son’s wedding in March. I lowered my carb intake to 40 a day and
adjusted my insulin to this as well. Since I have Celiac disease and
cannot have gluten (bread or anything made with wheat, flour, etc…) I
figured I could do this. I have lost 15 lbs since then. I’m not hungry
at all, I am also finally digesting food and am able to have regular
bowel movements that for years I haven’t be able to do since I am
supposed to have Diabetic Gastropareisis. I no longer need the Reglan
for that.
It shocked me to hear my stomach gurgle last week. My bladder has
calmed down and not nearly as hard to deal with as it was in the past.
Rashes I was having periodically have stopped too. My dr. doesn’t know
yet that I am doing this because he didn’t want me to. Just wondered if
anyone else noticed changes in their bodies by going low-carb. I do eat
