Nasty Old Ketones

Tuesday, March 28th, 2006

Hi Everyone,
Ok, we’ve run into a little problem. On Sunday night, Madelyn had an
allergic reaction to something in our new home, severe enough she had
to go to the ER and have an IV of benadryl and a steroid called Solu
Medrol. (sp?) I mean she blew up like a puffer fish!!! During the
whole ordeal, though, blood sugar never over 150.
The next morning, she woke at 395 with large ketones. Of course I
called the doctor freaking out, and she said the increase in blood
sugar was from the steroid, and the ketones would probably go away
with a bit more insulin.
Well now it’s Wednesday, she woke up at 313 this morning, and the
ketones are small. Doctor doesn’t seem too concerned about it, but
naturally I’m a wreck. I’m having her drink tons of fluid, and
giving her more to eat so that I can boost the insulin.
Any suggestions from the experts?

question to moderator( if there is one)

Monday, March 27th, 2006

Thank you, Melissa. I have found the same to be true. Either don’t open the mail and just tag it for deletion (there have been whole pages to delete, it seems, lately,) or read posts from the group page.

I, for one, do thank you for making it more pleasant to be able to read the group postings.

Exercises, Sharp things, etc.

Monday, March 27th, 2006

Hello Tina,

Exercise….. difficult topic. What are your interests… what are you into? Perhaps more importantly, what do you have access to?

There are many types and kinds of exercises. For weight loss, you will want something that gets your heart rate up and keeps it up, several times a week… perhaps as often as possible even ; ). However given the description of your recent wound, you would IMHO definitely want CLEARANCE from the medical folks, make certain…. your body is upto the challenges.

To start, you might consider something as “exotic” (by some accounts) as Yoga… or more correctly Hatha-Yoga as it is correctly called. There are lots of activities, different practices which you can do which will likely not remove huge amounts of weight, but after a short time might get you the mental frame of mind, the HABIT of helpful activities, behaviors which will get you to your end goal… the habit of exercise.

One of many possibilities…
Its my opinion, I could easily be mistaken,

Hello Mary,
Why so? Provided I’m only using Lantus, the syringe is sterile… as is the vial it is stored in.
The procedure for drawing insulin no longer requires putting air into the vial… (maybe I am mistaken?) simply insert, and draw up the required units… Where’s the big NONO?

Diet and CF, causing Diabetes?

Sunday, March 26th, 2006

Reading your posts, I have to wonder. Due to the CF issues, Paige is
on a high fat, high calorie diet. However, she still can’t gain the
wait she needs because her body malaborbs…which is why she is on
the enzymes to try to offset this. I wonder if the diet that people
with Cystic Fibrois are on…attributes to the diabetes issue. I am
definately going to ask at clinic.
I know they need this diet to protect the lungs…

Sharp Things…. (was insulin needles)

Friday, March 24th, 2006

Hello Leanne,

Unfortunately for many adequate, much less affordable health insurance is a major difficulty.

However, unless your syringe is dropped into something, or the lancet is literally crusty-dirty, its NOT necessary to change either one. You can use either until they are not sharp… or far, far more likely the lubricant on the needle itself is indeed used up.

But hey if you prefer to change them every time that’s fine too, but it is not necessary. A BETTER approach is to merely make sure our hands are clean and say washed with warm water and those factors will do better than a “virgin” lancet… in my experience anyway.

Jeff
PS (I don’t use the .33 gague ASL emoticon (the tiny one) because it can’t EASILY penetrate through my clothing ; ).

Fiber Question; better answer

Sunday, March 19th, 2006

Sorry, I forgot some of my nutrition… It has been a few years…

Here is a site that may help to explain the difference between the two fibers, as well as clear up the BG changing aspect of it…. interesting.

Fiber Question

Saturday, March 18th, 2006

I believe it has to do with whether the fiber is soluble or insoluble. One gets digested, the other sucks water out of your system through your large intestine walls, therefore making it easier for things to ‘pass through.’ Alleging that to be true, then the digestable stuff will have some calories in it……. don’t know if this helps much, but it wounds good!
