Insulin & Buses, trains, planes….

Sunday, April 30th, 2006

Good Morning Vicky,

You can take it on a train, on a plane, in a bus, on a trike, for a hike… it matters not. (Diabetes Dr. Seuss… I LOVE being able to do this….<sigh

Shaking should not do any harm…. heck if you were taking some of the cloudy insulins (ie NPH insulin) in a way you theoretically might skip a step in the injection-mixing process (e.g. rolling the vial)… but I always liked rolling the vial made me feel like I was actually doing something…. <gentle shrug

PS there is a different challenge when using insulin ON a plane, while in flight… but that isn’t a factor here… unless you’re driving at some awfully high altitudes while in a pressurized cabin :

you are going to LOVE it!

My daughter was on saline for 3 days and the we switched to insulin. I use to go every day at lunch to watch her get tested and get her shot, I haven’t been once since she went on the pump. It has made her very independent. The hardest part was learning how to change the infusion set and I feel comfortable with it already. We got the pump February 27th and went to insulin on the 2nd of March.

My daughter is very active, dancing 3 days a week for 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours each day. She wears her pump on a little belt and has had no problems. Things she has done that amaze me that it doesn’t get in her way…tumbling, basketball, pogo stick, sleep (even with her nighty she just clips it on her panties) She only takes it off for tubby time.

She works it herself and the grandparents are upset because they never had a chance to learn anything, she just does it herself. As long as you are good at counting carbs you’ll be fine.

Let me know what you think and how you do.

Thanks for caring and sharing,
Rhonda

pumps on roller coasters

Wednesday, April 26th, 2006

We just started the pump and delayed until after our trip because we didn’t want to try something “new” on vacation as well as it not being able to do the coaster thing, which our pump advisor told us.

Insulin and School Buses…

Monday, April 24th, 2006

Vicky,

I used to carry mine in my pocket when I loaded aircraft with freight. I would be jumping on/off equipment all night, in and out of airplanes (from the cargo door) and my insulin still worked fine, as far as I could tell. I suppose if you stored it over the back wheels of the bus, it may receive some impact that COULD damage the molecular structure of the insulin, but that would take an awfully high amount of energy to do so. You could also purchase a bit of memory foam and put it in the case in which you carry the insulin.

The best thing to do, I suggest, though, is to contact either your doctor or the insulin’s manufacturer. (or pharmacist).

Sunday, April 23rd, 2006

Hey everyone, have I got a question for you. I drive a school bus,
and my busy season is finlly here! :) I know we can take Becky’s
insulin with us in the bus, but is it gonna mess it up being shook
up in a bus all day? I can grab it from the house at noon, but
there will be days I won’t get home till after 8 p.m.
Thanks
Vicky

Mistake about Nick, I apologize

Wednesday, April 19th, 2006

I talked to my mom again. Mom met a little boy who played piano and
had cancer at her facility. AFTER he left, a letter was sent to her
asking her to send get well cards to this child. The child, she
assumed, was the same as the one that came to her facility.
IT WAS NOT the same child.
Nick Waters dees exist, and does want cards…so please consider
doing that still.
I apologize for getting my facts wrong. Mom does as well. We both
feel very strongly about helping children with cancer. My brother is
a leukemia survivor. We knew several children that we grew up at
Sloan and Kettering with …who weren’t as fortunate as Drew.
She will be contacting the childs family, that played piano for them,
to try to find out the accurate information about his wish.
I really apologize guys. I got caught up in helping this little boy,
and jumped the gun. However, Nick Waters does exist, and does want

Hi EVERYONE,
Here’s the story. A little boy who has cancer, and only a few months
left to live…came to my mother’s work, to play the piano (he is an
incrediable piano player). He has a wish to be in the Guiness Book of
World Records for the most get well cards! When make a wish
approached him, that is all he wanted!
It would mean so much to this little boy if he could get as many
cards as possible.
Can you please, please help, and send a card. I am sending one from
each of my kids, family members, and trying to get there school
involved.
Lets swamp this child with cards. I don’t know how many he needs. I
just know it’s alot. My mom is checking on the details.
He is 12 years old, and his name is Nick.
Please send get well cards to:

tip of the day

Monday, April 17th, 2006

Jennifer,

I have a request: Will you keep posting the ‘tip of the day?” I really enjoy that, and it is not too much information to process all at once, so I am more likely to remember it.

Thank you for posting the ones you already have.
