Highs or Lows

Sunday, May 28th, 2006

Hello Vicky,

Which is worse being severely burned or severely frozen?

Highs take a long time to happen. Regardless you can take action and interfere with the “high” almost always.

Lows, that might not be the case. If low enough you can’t easily self-correct the problem and being unable are of the two choices the far more dangerous… in my experience. No contest at all… but its not a fair question either, see my first sentence above…

Highs, or Lows?

Thursday, May 25th, 2006

I know “bottoming out” is scary but overall, high blood sugars are
much more damaging to the body systems.
Didn’t I read within the past week or so, that “lows” are more
damaging to the body? Or am I losing it again?

What NOT to do!!

Mary,

Steel Magnolias was filmed HOW many years ago? We have come a long way, so take a sizable amount of comfort from that. And remember, everything is magnified 1000X on TV.

24hr. after the fact (was tip of the day, march 26)

Hello Again Jen,

<<When Your Blood Glucose Changes and Your Routine Doesn’t

Ok, now here is where I automatically become skeptical. Now where does that hypothesis come from re: lows being caused as much as 24 hours “after the fact”? I love the possibility because that could explain the “unexplainable” however I’d love to see their studies, what they call proof.

I’m of the ~show me~ persuasion… flesh this one out a little if you would?

Just because it sounds good doesn’t make it true… automatically at least….

The dietician

Wednesday, May 17th, 2006

Figured I’d bore you all with my newbie experiences with my
dietician. If you do nod off, don’t let your head hit your keyboard.
Faxed my food, bs, and insulin logs in to the dietician. I was
expecting a long lecture about my eating. I’ve kept the carbs low,
but sometimes at the expense of weirdness. Like early morning
sausage patty parties. Probably not good for me in other ways, but
low in carbs!
Then there was the question about the 6 servings of low-fat pudding.
I had to. I explained it as a typo. I had adjusted my shot
accordingly, so…. it was a treat, right?
All but one day a week I brownbag my lunch. A few weeks ago we
bought 30 about 1-cup sized Tupperware cups. Once a week I fill them
all with home-prepared fat-free Jello. It’s cheaper than the pre-
packaged stuff, and a borderline obsession for me. The dietician
noticed not because it’s bad for me, but because I seem to be

Carbs, Net Carbs, etc.

Friday, May 12th, 2006

Greetings.
I’m reading through all the mounds of stuff provided to me by my
endocrinologist and dietician, and I’ve run into a question I can’t
get answered (I do have a call into my dietician, so I’ll get her
answer tomorrow, hopefully).
When counting carbs, do you use the total carb count or do you
subtract off carbs from fiber, Maltitol (whatever that is), etc?
I had my first almost-low last weekend (59), and I’m quite sure I
counted correctly. Just wondering if it’s because I included carbs
from fiber, or because I can’t add unless I first put the servings in
a spreadsheet.
Regards and thanks!

Diabetic Bracelets BEWARE of Medic Alert!

Wednesday, May 10th, 2006

Hi People,
This is about the Medic Alert Foundation, and why I refuse to support
them or wear their bracelet any more. I first got their bracelet in
1989. I moved in 1999 and paid the $$ to have the record changed, and
since my brother is my emergency contact person, and he moved and had
a different area code and phone number, that was part of the change.
They sent me a new card and and the paperwork showing my updated
information. In 2003, I moved again, and wrote to them saying I needed
to change my address in their files. They sent me paperwork showing my
brother’s old phone number from 3 years earlier, and listed a type of
insulin that I have NEVER used! It turns out that my medical record
was not only NEVER updated, it was fictional! When I tried to call
them, I was rudely told I would have to pay for the record to be
corrected. I told them it was their mistake and I wasn’t going to pay
a second time.

Tip Of The Day: Dealing with Lows

Thursday, May 4th, 2006

Hm, that was good info! Thank you. I have found most of my highs are resultant of lows that have rebounded (Simogee effect). It normally takes 2 to 3 days to get it back within normal range. Thanks!
