Highs, or Lows?

I know “bottoming out” is scary but overall, high blood sugars are
much more damaging to the body systems.
Didn’t I read within the past week or so, that “lows” are more
damaging to the body? Or am I losing it again?

I wish this would get clarified for my brain as well. Is there a “worse” scenario?

High or Low, which is worse?

    Vicky,

I believe I had said ‘lows’ can be more damaging more quickly. If the brain does not get enough glucose, as in a low blood sugar experience, it CAN lead to death and brain damage, depending on how low for how long. It’s quick.

High sugars, consistantly, are more damaging over time, I believe. The complications arising from continuously high sugars

I think, if I were to be afraid of either, high or low, I would fear the low. Kidney damage, nerve damage beats the heck outta brain damage any day, in my book, but there may be those who disagree.

I am sorry if I mislead you. That was truly not my intention!

    Good morning, Melissa,

We have heard quite a bit from you over the last week! Are you on spring break? It’s been nice having your input and comments.

IS there such a thing as spring break for med students? (I think I remember hearing that at some point along the way….)

    Best to you,

    Joan

    Melissa,

I understand EXACTLY what you mean about never having summer off again, forever. We are leaving for our last big family vacation to Florida to my mom and dad’s place. I have hopefully gotten a nursing internship with Christ Hospital in the ICU department. THAT lasts 16 weeks, with only weekends off to study. At least it’s paid! : )

Saying ‘good-bye’ to the student life if going to be difficult. Doggone, why do we all have to be ill all year long? And, as a newbie employee, my time off will be very limited. UGH.

Even after you graduate, though, Melissa, there seems to be so much more to learn…. I guess that is good for all of us.

Best wishes, and keep an eye on the light at the end of the tunnel,

    Joan

    Mary,

I understand! One time I got out of bed to get ready for night shift work. I did not know I was low, and when I stood up, I fell right down. OK. Got back up, and fell into the dresser, clearing all that was on top. It was like some bad movie. My mind was still going what I thought was ok, but my bod just wouldn’t do what I wanted it to do…. I get this mental picture of it now, and I have to laugh. I apologize, but I did giggle a bit when you said you ran into the door jamb (spelling?)
