Syringes

Wednesday, June 28th, 2006

Ok, I have by far probably the dumbest question ever asked to this
panel, but here goes:
When my daughter was diagnosed, the prescription was written for
syringes that are 3/10 cc, for 30 units or less.
A friend of the family who is a nurse, recently gave me boxes of
needles that read 1/2 cc, for 50 units or less.
Now saving a few dollars each month on these syringes is a great plus
for me. But is a unit still a unit no matter what the size of the
syringe? It looks very different.
Someone help, my head hurts from the math.
Thanks,
Stephanie

anxiety vs low blood sugar

Tuesday, June 27th, 2006

Jenny,

I get the same thing….really stinks. I also get that when I use certain OTC sinus meds. Learned that one by trial & error, too. How is school going?

Stacy
Anxiety feels a lot like low blood sugar to me. I always struggle to actually check my blood sugar when I feel this way….I feel low, I should eat. But usually, when it is actually anxiety, my blood sugar is quite high.

Major goof

Sunday, June 25th, 2006

Good Morning Kate,

How come you don’t have a fanny pack with all the necessary supplies in it (aka a diabetic purse <wg

THANKS ; )

Course that’s how (IMV) you know if you’re truly close with someone… whether you can leave “supplies” at their house, right <wg

Major Goof!

Hello Steve,

The insulin pump also does NOT mean that we get to ignore having backup/alternate insulin with us.

That plus the extra tubing, the extra infusion sets, the IV prep wipes, the priming syringe, and the duct tape <only half kidding

Anyone here ever “doubled up” on the short-acting insulin, not being awake and thinking it was the LONG acting stuff ?????? Ayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyeya…… Now that’s a ~fun game~…. (NOT)!

Article Regarding Dr. Faustman (Iacocca’s Researcher)

Wednesday, June 21st, 2006

Thought this might be of interest to everyone…Sorry about this
posting being so lengthy.
Goodnight, Evelyn :-) Is Diabetes Cure a Buck Too Far?

Denise Faustman just wants a crack at curing diabetes.
Harvard researcher Dr. Denise Faustman thinks she can cure type 1 (or
juvenile) diabetes. She’s done it in mice and wants to try it on
humans. She’s gotten financial backing from the Lee Iacocca
Foundation and other groups, but needs millions more. But she isn’t
going to get it from the world’s largest diabetes foundation,
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International, for reasons
having little to do with the potential of her work.

Lee Iacocca’s Foundation

Tuesday, June 20th, 2006

Hi all,
I am a volunteer for the JoinLeeNow.org foundation that is sponsored
by Lee Iacocca. Lee Iacocca’s wife passed away from Type 1 diabetes
20 years ago and he started a foundation to find a cure.
I couldn’t find a way to put a website link in this message but
please take a minute to visit his website, www.joinleenow.org to see
a video clip of his speech last year. It is only a few minutes long
and the doctor that has found the possible cure also speaks about how
she has discovered this cure.
This is not stem cell research and it is the first possible cure that
I have heard of that tackles the disease rather than masking the
problem such as the islet transplant procedures.
We are trying to raise money to fund this research and for obvious
reasons, pharmaceutical companies are against it.
If this turns out to be a success, this possible cure would be rather

A neat story about insulin pumping…

Monday, June 19th, 2006

**Sorry, the pictures didn’t transfer over but I found this story on
www.diabeticmommy.com**
A Pumping Story
By Rebecca (rdraben)
“Rebecca was diagnosed with type I diabetes 20 years ago when she was
12 years old. She had to give herself at least 4 injections every
day. On top of that, she had to prick her finger to test her blood
sugar many times every day. She had to decide how much food she was
going to eat before she ate it, and then she was not allowed to eat
any more food until her next injection.” Okay, I know that sounds a
bit dramatic, but if there were a television show about diabetics
going on pumps and I was on it, that is how I imagine mine would
start.
I used Humalog in a pen before meals and I used NPH in a syringe at
bedtime. I used a syringe at bedtime because I usually had to mix in

low carb cookbooks

Saturday, June 17th, 2006

Have any of you looked at a low carb cookbook lately? I just got one
for my cousin, she is on the low carb diet and doing quite well with
it. In the local grocery store I saw a low carb slow cooker cookbook.
I got it for her. If you want to see something hilarious, you should
see this. In the back there is a desert section. The two I remember
are peanut butter cookies and pie. This is how you make low carb
peanut butter cookies. Use one cup of chuncky peanut butter, one cup
of bulk splenda, and one large egg. Mix them all together and place on
ungreased cookie sheet. Mash them with a fork to get desired shape and
size. Bake at 350 degrees for ten minutes or until center is not wet.
For some reason she doesn’t think she will try this one. The pie
recipe is better. Use one cup boiling water, ice cubes, sugar free
jello, lite cool whip. Mix the boiling water and jello. Add ice cubes
and remove those which don’t melt. Sound familiar? Then whisk in the
cool whip with a wire wisk until blended. Place in pie pan and

stop taking my insulin

Friday, June 16th, 2006

I know, I should give myself the insulin shots every day, 2ce a day
and yes, I know I should be checking my levels. Ive been type one
diabetic for 3 yrs now and Ive had enough. I just dont want to do
this anymore. Am I still in denial? Perhaps…but I stopped taking
my insulin 2 months ago and Im feeling fine, just thirsty alot. I
keep my carbs down & I drink plenty of fluids.
One of the reasons I did stop, was because I seriously couldnt
afford it anymore. Something always seems to come up when its time
to get a refill of my insulin, and I cannot buy it…even with our
insurance. My husband fusses at me all the time, believe me, but I
let it go in one ear and out the other cause I see it as a money
issue as well, he doesnt. Im not a spoiled little brat, Im a good
mom and yes, I want to live to see my kids grow & have kids
etc…but at this time I just cant afford it. Theres nothing more
to “cut back” on…we are at our limit.
