A question for the parents…..
hey everyone
I have a question or 2 for the parents. Do you allow your child with
diabetes to ride the school bus? And if you do, would you want the
driver to know?

Julie–Yeah, wow, my how things have changed!! I was dx’ed T1 when I was
in 7th grade. That was the winter of 1965. Nobody knew I was diabetic. I had
no test kit, no glucose tabs, no juice box, nothing. No cell phones , no pagers
or walkie-talkies. It was the dark ages. I rode that school bus right thru
middle
and high school, until I bought my own car–in 1968, a 1957 VW bug, for $75.
I do recall walking home from the bus stop–quite a long way–and
occasionally getting home semi-conscious…! But, I always managed to get
home. Oh, and the one time my best friend had to stop me from driving, take
the wheel and drive me home… and he didn’t have his license yet! But
remember–we couldn’t test our glucose levels then, so sometimes it was very
hit or miss–just going by how you felt, especially as a kid. The ONLY time
anything “special’ was done for me because of my diabetes was, sometime
during high school, I ended up with gym class right before lunch–and of
course would be going hypo several times per week because of it. My mother
finally got my gym class changed, with a doctor’s slip telling the school it was
dangerous for me to take gym before lunch! What we DIDN’T know then, eh?
