13 yr. Shooter…

Monday, October 16th, 2006

Good Morning Prakashbhai Thakrar.

Sincere congratulations for your son’s accomplishment to both him and yourself! I am sure your patience and persistence have helped him become the skilled marksmen that he clearly has/will become.
[Note: all Type 1 diabetics are expert “shooters”, though usually in a different “arena” <mischievous grin

Congratulations,

Jeff

Message for Kate Greene

Thursday, October 12th, 2006

Hi Kate,
I was curious what health care provider you were referring to when you
replied to a posting on trigger finger. You mentioned that it was BCBS
with a $2500 deductible. I am currently researching our options as
diabetics with health insurance and am curious what your experience was
and who with.
Thanks for any info…Evelyn :-)

Thanks!

My daughter has had her first episode of DKA since her initial
diagnosis in Jan 2004. She’s been battling a flu/cold for 2 days,
and this morning her ketones were at “large” level. They’re back
down to small, and she’s drinking a lot of water, but even though
her blood sugar was also back down to 210 this morning, it has
steadily increased throughout the day. Just now it was 365! She’s 14
years old and normally keeps her blood sugar fairly stable, even
when sick. Her last A1C was 6.6. I don’t know if I should wake up
the endocrinologist again (there’s only one pediatric endo in
Vegas), or even take her to the hospital. Her ketones are still
at “small.” This morning the endo increased her insulin dosage by
quite a bit.
Please write to me directly at desertpoetess@… or respond on
the group. I don’t know whether to wait it out through the night and
call the doc in the morning…or maybe give her a couple more units

Medical ID Bracelets…

Tuesday, October 3rd, 2006

Need some suggestions for a Medical ID Bracelet.
I have been thinking I should be wearing one and I was curious what
info most people put on it.
For example:
Should I put “Type 1 Diabetic” or “Insulin Dependent Diabetic” or
just “Diabetic”
Also, I figured if I was found unconscious…should I put “Do not
give insulin, need sugar”
The reason I was thinking about this was, I read a story of a man who
had very low blood sugar and he fell unconscious. His friend gave
him a shot of insulin thinking he was helping but we all know he made
it worse.
Let me know if you guys have any suggestions…Evelyn :-)

, There is a good chance you are going through a hormone change in
your body that is requiring more insulin demand of you,
this can happen in men as well as women. In women, sugars tend to move
up as their uh-umm cycles start. Hate to be so graphic.
There is also a very good chance that NPH is not for you. Have they
tried you on the mixed insulins yet or Lantus? I know how hard it is to
take care of oneself with a limited income but really it’s not that
unusual to have to keep finding the right amount to stabilize you and
keep you there. There is one very cheap, cheap way to achieve this. For
7 straight days, eat and drink the exact same thing and record it, time,
date and meal. It will help you see where you need the adjustment the
most. I have had to do this in the past working with NPH and Reg. As off
the wall as it seems, it works. Let me know if you do it. It’s hard too
because making every day the same can be, but look at it like it’s a
job. That makes it easier. The pay off will be control you understand
