Driving

Hi everyone,
Just wondering if any of you have had problems driving after getting
diabetes. I was only diagnosed last November and ever since, I had
problems with eye sight as well as not feeling confident behind the
wheel. I am always worried about my blood sugar falling and I tend to
get a bit anxious. I went to the eye doctor to see about getting a
prescription but she told me I need to wait a little longer for my BG
to level out more.
I guess I am feeling ready to get back to a “new” routine and without
driving, that is almost impossible for me…any suggestions or
experiences??
Have a good weekend..Evelyn :-)

    Hi, Case,

Ditto what Kate said, as well as finding shots go through panty hose just fine. Have not seen any incidence of runs in the hose, either. : )

Worrying about lows while driving is normal for us, I think. I have been instructed to check my BG before driving, and then intermittently while I am driving if I am going a long way. I haven’t developed my skill enough to check while driving, like Kate, though!

If you are having difficulty seeing without glasses, perhaps it is time to find another doc. Even if your sugars are not level, you have a right to be able to see, even if you are not driving. The lenses can be changed while you keep the frames.

Since I have gotten my sugars under control, I have noticed a marked improvement in my eyesight. NEVER would I have admitted that a short time ago!

Keep up the good attitude and it will take you far.

    Evelyn,

I have been diabetic longer than I have been driving, and I haven’t had any real problems. I’ve had to test my sugar while driving, but that just takes a little practice. I’ve also found that keeping glucose tablets in my purse or juice boxes in the car is hugely helpful for when I *do* get a low on the road. I can’t really speak to the vision issue, but your eye doctor is probably right. Once you get into a solid routine and your sugars level out, they will be able to better determine your eyeglass prescription. Best of luck.
