My Job Update

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

Well, here it is Thursday and about an hr. and a half until I have to go to work for the evening. I will probably work 4-11:30 like last night.

Tuesday I started dropping Low, and had to have my husband get me something to eat once he got off work. I was starting to feel the signs… even with eating Cheetos etc. while working. And I was over 250 when I took 15 units of Insulin and ate lunch. I worked 11-7 that day. So it is going to be a learning game I see now that I am working.

I do try and carry something sweet in my pocket, and other food to munch on while I am working just in case I get busy with Customers. But I do have time usually to sit and get a bite to eat when I need too, as I have someone working with me most of my shift.

Have a wonderful rest of the week.

12 Step Program for Diabetics

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

Hmm… An interesting thought. I have almost 9 yrs. of Sobriety, and I know AA helped me in the beginning before I got back into church.

We are Powerless over our Diabetes, but it is up to us what we do with it. That is why it is good that there are groups such as this to help us cope and get our BG under control.

Numbers, numbers, numbers

Wednesday, January 24th, 2007

Just curious how the group handles recording their numbers. I have to
fax my numbers in every few weeks: morning, prelunch, predinner, and
bedtime. Along with my shot records.
I plug my OneTouch in to my PC and download the numbers into a
spreadsheet. I add in a few formulas for calculating my 7 day averages
for all the times… mainly because I have a problem at night being
anywhere near 140 no matter what I shoot at dinner. This way I can
track if the averages are at least headed down. At least I know the
bad news before the endo calls and tells me it.
I actually find the spreadsheets to be depressing, specially right now
as I’m struggling to get my evening numbers under control. Last
weekend’s dumb-me-let-my-Novolog-go-bad episode helped my averages in
the worst way. Two days don’t normally make a trend, but I wasn’t
doing that great before the oopsie.
I really want to be 90-140. I don’t obsess about it, I just want to

Isn’t it Frustrating

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2007

How sometimes no matter what we do, we run high, and then when we least expect it, all of a sudden, we are Low and needing to do something immediately. I know with me starting my New job, I am running higher a lot, and figure it is the Nerves of starting a New job. But then when I take any insulin, especially while working, I am afraid I will drop too low.

Last night for example at work, I was starting to notice the Low signs and knew I needed to really get something good to eat in me. How does a person know what is best for the when they first start working again? I am on Lantus and Novolog.

sugar over 600

Monday, January 22nd, 2007

I just wanted to let everybody who is new to the pump know to never leave
your sight in for too long. I never learn. I left mine in for 5 days
instead of 3. My sugar was over 600. My machine only goes up to 600 then
it says HI. I remember somebody from my pump company telling me that the
body sees it as something foreign and doesn’t let the insulin go through.
Someday I’ll learn not to do this. Just a little tip.

Cheaper Diabetic Supplies

Saturday, January 20th, 2007

Hi there,
I just received my issue of Diabetes Health magazine and I noticed an
ad for cheaper diabetes testing supplies, syringes and insulin. I
thought I would pass it on for anyone who would benefit from this
information.
The Website is: www.relion.com
It is products offered through Walmart or Sam’s Club. I have posted
some of the information below as I am not sure how to put a link on
this posting.
Hope it helps, Evelyn :-) ***** RELION®/NOVOLIN® INSULIN *****

Health Insurance

Saturday, January 20th, 2007

Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone here has double coverage? The reason I ask
is I was told by my endo that this is pretty common since as diabetics
it is hard to get health insurance.
What I am talking about is paying and continuing my coverage
(individual plan with terrible benefits $300/mo) but when an employer
is able to offer you a health plan, you pay for that too. The reason
being that most people do not stay at one job for the whole life and
even with the additonal cost, some people never let their coverage they
had when diagnosed disappear.
Was wondering if anyone is doing this…?
Evelyn :-)

Heat or bad Novolog?

Saturday, January 13th, 2007

Greetings. Quick question for the group.
I’ve been abnormally high the last 3-4 days. At first I thought I just
wasn’t shooting high enough. Tonight and last night I shot 1:10 ratio
instead of 1:15, ate right, counted right, and I’m 260 2 hours after
dinner!
I remember a thread a few days ago about heat driving some high, but
this seems very high. Could it be that my Novolog has gone bad? It
doesn’t expire for some time, and it’s not discolored.
Anyone else have a similar experience?
Thanks,
Mike
