the Ugly & the sweet (….was big brother)

Sunday, February 25th, 2007

Mary,

You need to have several forms filled out, BEFORE you goto a hospital. First and foremost you want to appoint somebody you trust 100% with the ability to make medical decisions in the case you were unable or rendered unable. They are your advocate and speak for you forcefully, when required! Make it clear, and fill out the forms.

I’ve had lots of dangerously bad experiences in hospitals, but they’ve also saved my butt I am confidant far more times than I have fingers and toes (20) combined! You want back-up to the back-up.

A trauma center-teaching hospital which will remain nameless in Philadelphia (not Penn, Mercy, U of Penn…) the idiots gave me 70/30 and my sugar was never below 500 for at least a solid week until I called the Diabetes Nurse on duty and make it very clear I was going to sign myself out AMA, if they did not attend to my specific diabetic instructions and protocols.

I still got no results until I “accidentally” used some Humalog one evening per the Senior Night Duty Nurse’s suggestion aloud ~you know if I were you… hypothetically of course…. I’d get some Humalog and I might accidentally use some, and then TELL me about it, after the fact….~

Golly gee, my sugars came down, FINALLY….

There are good people in a hospital as well as the dangerous morons.

Brian & Mary T -re: tip of the day

Sunday, February 18th, 2007

Hello Brian,

Re: sleeping in and having a higher number because of it. Depending on the particular details could also be the ~dawn effect~ you’re encountering and not have much to do with the NPH ~petering out~? (Mary T. heaven only knows ; ) what’s going on in the body of a pregnant diabetic lady, sugar-wise. Not too well versed in that arena.)

Merely a thought,
Jeff

PS Stacy welcome back. Hope things heal well!!!!

Greetings, friends!

Just wanted to thank you all for your kind thoughts & prayers. I am now back to work. The surgeon is pleased with how my eye is healing, but it will be a while before we know just how successful it was. I hope you are all doing well!

Weight Gain From Insulin

Tuesday, February 13th, 2007

Ok… now that I am working, I am thinking I should be loosing a little of the weight I have gained from being on Insulin. But when I weighed myself, it looked like I might have even gained a pd. or two. But I weighed myself at night I think.

So when does the weight ever come off, or is there something special we must do? I eat less usually with being on Insulin than I did before. It just gets Frustrating, that I have gained over 10 pds. since last September when I started using Insulin.

Hello Lisa,

Naaaah, Ipicac <sp.?

Heck, I’ve drunken hot chocolate (someone else’s mind you), coffee, think I might have even contemplated Joy Dishwashing Soap because it looked a lot like PRETTY, bright Apple Juice. But I’m sure I’ve had everything under the sun… prune juice…. grape juice…. grapefruit juice…. heaven only knows….

(Whispered quietly under his breath ~….and I don’t like juice darn it….~)

Can’t say any of ‘em that I can recall anyway were things I’d stand in line for…. long as I’m not forced to remember the details of the “sugar-troth” , I’m just peachy…. thank you very much ; )

Cramps

Thursday, February 8th, 2007

Although not a diabetic (wife is) I sometimes experience severe muscle
cramps at night. Has to do with the intense manual labor I do at 56
years old. For immediate relief, take a spoonful of mustard. Yes, that
is the yellow stuff you put on hot dogs, etc. Don’t know why it works
but my wife heard about it and I have tried it successfully several
times. Does not necessarily relieve all the pain, but certainly helps
a bunch.

Doctors Advance in Helping Body to Repair Itself

Wednesday, February 7th, 2007

Hi all,
This is an old article that relates to Dr. Faustman’s research which
is currently being funded by the Lee Iacocca foundation through
donations. It is interesting and explains how they came upon this
discovery. It does mention that she does not know where the new
islet cells came from but since this article, Dr. Faustman has
discovered the spleen does play a role in it.
(FYI: This research does not use embryonic stem cells & the clinical
trials have been approved by the FDA)
Hope you find it interesting and if you are interested in getting
involved, please visit: “joinleenow.org”.
Happy 4th to all of you ! Evelyn :-) January 15, 2002

Hello Lisa,

The one problem with the lifesavers is you need basically the WHOLE wrapper full to make a serious difference. Its hard candy and will work, but sucking down the whole thing can get ugly when things are heading to fuzzy places if you take my meaning. One or two pieces is not enough to really do much, except stick out our tongue at the ~low sugar train~ that’s coming up the tracks REAL fast & hard… us lying there kind sorta struggling against the tightening ropes….

When I was a kid I thought it was just GREAT that someone invented a candy (sic. for diabetics) and called them LIFE SAVERS, still think its the REAL reason behind the name ; )

I’m a big fan of the tubes (Gluctose, Cake icing, etc., etc), they float and have zero heat sensitivity whereas cans of soda, candy don’t play too well in hot or cold. Merely a thought for whatever its worth…
