Eating/girl animal

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

We are very blessed that Syd’s principal has a type 1 daughter and when she found out about lunch room comments she held a meeting with me, her, them and the school nurses (who by the way are great, again we are blessed!)

I love this group and the support it offers!

Eating different types of things

[INLINE]

Is it not funny how people are always quick to judge us as being Diabetic.. especially Insulin dependent Diabetics, on what we should and should not eat? They are always trying to tell us something is not good for us, or we should not have to use so much Insulin when we eat something, or whatever… or if we would not eat the Sweets, we might not need Insulin.

I for one, know that every Diabetic is different, and not everyone can eat the same foods, and get the same results… But for me, we are the ones in charge of our bodies, and should we not know what is best.

For me, some foods like Rice are dangerous, and will spike me worse than something sweet… so I know it varies with a lot of factors, which is best for me.

Tip about Medications

Monday, March 26th, 2007

Not sure how many have to pay for their prescriptions and such, but I know with all of the Cut backs they keep on doing, more and more of us have to worry about the high cost of our prescriptions for being Diabetic, etc.

Make sure you Shop around before Spending any $$ on drugs. What will surely kill you financially at one pharmacy, may save you lots of $$ at places say like Costco, Sams Club, or WalMart. We know as we used to get Prescriptions filled at RiteAid and now use WalMart. And if you can find a price cheaper online for a prescription and prove it to WalMart, they will match or beat that price for you… We have saved like $4 off of like 2 bottles of Lantus compared to Costcos online price when we proved the price to Walmart.

Just something to think about in this tight economy.

Tingling Feet

Friday, March 23rd, 2007

Not since the diagnosis in October have I been this scared, I need
guidance from the experts out there, until I hear back from the endo.
For the past two weeks, Madelyn has “complained” about her feet feeling
tingly and numb. Usually right after she’d say it, the feeling would
fade, and she’d be back to doing whatever she was doing.
Last night, she cried and cried because her feet felt so numb. Isn’t
she a little early for this? She’s only six. My heart is breaking and
I don’t know what to do for her. I tried rubbing her feet and it only
seemed to make her more agitated.
What is causing this, and will it get better? She always has shoes on,
I never let her go barefoot anymore. I spend more time looking at her
feet than probably any part of her body. Could it be related to her
pump? About the time she started the pump, her feet started acting up?

Terrorism in London

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007

We had terrorists strike again this afternoon.Luckily only the
detonators went off,so only one person was injured and that was the
bomber.Three underground trains and a bus again ,just after midday.
The whole City is thrown into chaos with a lot of tube lines closed
down.People are reacting stoically, but it is very frightening.
I live in Kettering ,about 80 miles from London and know many people
who commute there. One friend is a senior manager on the Underground and
had to work all last night, still working on the residual mess from the
attack two weeks ago.
There was a terrorist arrested outside Downing Street and University
Hospital has a Police cordon around it,they think a bomber is inside.
I do not understand those Muslims who treat life so cheaply.

Question about cold office environment…

Monday, March 19th, 2007

Hello Liz,

Woooooooooooooooooooow. Am I reading that correctly, HUMALOG, 2 units every 2 hours??? Its not much but you’ve got overlap there in terms of how long each shot lasts. Be real, real careful!!!

As for body temp, yes, it will effect absorption, clearly. As will injection site, and many other factors. But I think you’ll find its not as dramatic as we might like or wish it to be. But perhaps for some cases it might be more so.

Cold= our core being well supplied circulation wise and the limbs less so. Heat = Limbs better supplied the capillaries, fingers, toes, ears, doing more work, etc., etc. Its real generic, but it will be interesting to see what’s been published specifically. I remember there was something research wise, but I cannot remember precisely what…? Island peoples lowest incidence of diabetes? Cold climates most difficult BG swings… something… that made sense and had been studied, cannot remember precisely what though…

Sigh,
Jeff

Question about cold office environments

Tuesday, March 13th, 2007

Hey everyone, I hope you are doing well. I have been experiencing
something strange lately and I was wondering if any of you have had a
similar experience. My office is very very cold — I mean frigid.
Today it is 92 degrees outside and I am wearing heavy wool pants two
shirts, a big bulky sweater and I am still getting the chills in my
office. I have noticed that while I am at work my body doesn’t seem to
respond as well to the humalog, I like to keep my BS under 100 b/c if
it goes over that number I always get very hungry. Anyway, I am hardly
eating any carbs during the day but am still taking 2 uits every two
hours trying to keep my BS down and even then it will only go down to
the low 100’s. However, as soon as I get home from work my BS always
drops rather quickly to 60 or 70 without any extra insulin. Has anyone
heard of body temp having an effect on insulin absorbtion? I recently
read that insulin is absorb more quickly when your body temp is higher
but I wonder if a lowered body temp actually SLOWS the rate of

Has anyone used a diabetic watch during the night?

Monday, March 12th, 2007

My husband has been diabetic for 20 yrs.,has no complications, takes
good care of himself, etc. Sometimes, however, he has lows during
the
night and doesn’t awaken to them. He (and I) are wondering about the
watches out there that can detect ‘lows.’ We are aware of the costly
one that has sensors that cost about $63.00 every 16 days to operate!
Any others beside this one?
It would be helpful if anyone out there actually uses one that has
been effective for them during the night. Thank you
