Message from Mary-Ellen

Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

Mary wrote to me and asked me to pass this message on:
I cant type much as Im sooo tired at this point and my
feet are still not unswelled. Well we are both home
today. Baby is well, he left the hospital at an even 7
lbs and is feeding ravenously. His breathing problems
were just the usual for a diabetic baby at 36 weeks
but he is great now. He spent a week total in NICU. Im
doing well other than considerably sore from the
surgery and tired from lack of sleep. i will catch up
soon, and please foward this info on. Ill post a link
to the web pictures of him soon.

Desperation, aggrevation, and other random thoughts…

Hello Joan,

Have zero time this morning, apologies.

Based on what you wrote re: a comparison between BREAD and fruit, in you case BLUEBERRIES… ONE reason you got a much higher spike from the berries is because you ate a FULL (8 oz) CUP of them (or more)…. which is basically 3 fruit exchanges or +/- probably 45 carbs, likely a little more.

You’d get a higher spike from 45 + than you would with 15, 20+

It’s a boy! Mary-Ellen’s baby

Sunday, May 6th, 2007

Mary has written to me and asked me to tell you so it is easiest if I
pass the whole message on to you.
Howard
Had the baby on 7/31 at 756 pm via csection. Boy
weighing 6 lb 14 oz and 21 inches at 36 weeks. I Did
not fully develop preeclampsia but placenta began to
fail as can happen with the type one and baby did not
have any fluid on ultrasound sunday where he had ok
amounts friday. We had just begun to take a turn for
the worse. Csect went great this time, baby cried
right after birth but had the “usual” diabetes lung
issues, but blood sugars were ok. I was in ICU for a
day then the floor until this am. Baby is still in ICN
(neonate intensive care) but is doing better. never
had to be on a ventilator, just under the oxygen hood.

Desperation, aggrevation, and other random thoughts.

Hi Everyone,
I know this forum is supposed to be for discussion and not
necessarily for venting and crying, but I don’t have anywhere else to
turn. Nobody seems to understand the frustration I am feeling these
days in regards to diabetes and this pump. I don’t mean to be a
crybaby, but I think after 10 months reality has finally slapped me
across the face.
I HATE DIABETES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hate it, hate it, hate it. I
hate that my kid has it, I hate that some of your kids have it, I
hate that anyone has it. This disease sucks. And this whole pump
business, what a joke. After one month, her average blood sugar is a
whopping 183. I can’t wait to see her A1C in September.
I feel like the world’s worst mother, I can’t make my baby better,
and neither can this pump. It seems I was promised a big bag of
sunshine and good control, and I haven’t seen either. I know it

Intro -Kate

Saturday, April 28th, 2007

Dear Kate,

It is wonderful to hear things are going so well!!!

<Severely amused look

As for lack of eye contact, or even his “size” lets ask you the question… is there anything you can truly do about it? As for his weight he’ll take care of that himself… with his voracious FEED ME routine ; ) As for Guy’s lack of ~direct eye contact~ probably not either………

My kids HATE eye contact too (and they are older), but its got nothing to do with the ~diabetes dragon~… they just aren’t wild about looking mom/dad in the eye and explaining stuff preferring that “…. Mr. Nobody from Nowhere with Nothing did “IT”…” whatever the particular IT happens to be….

Guys a cutie, a baby and already confounding the ~white coats~… he’s a little rebel <wg

Take it easy on yourself…. he’ll be fine, his ~mommy person~ loves him and will guarantee that!!!

Aid to Paramedics

Thursday, April 19th, 2007

In the UK there is a scheme being operated by various caring agencies
which is free to the user. You are given a plastic tub with a lid on
it.Inside the tub is a form and you can put all your medical
details, next of kin,etc on it.The tub is kept in the door of your
fridge. With the tub comes two green cross stickers. One goes on the
inside wall where your front door opens and the other on the fridge
door.If there is an emergency the paramedics see the cross as they
enter and look for the other cross, then they can locate the tub and
read the details. If you are unconscious they then know what is likely
to be the cause and can save valuable minutes in treating you. This is a
really simple and clever idea and it works.

Accu-Chek Active Test Strips

Tuesday, April 17th, 2007

I have had a letter from Roche Diagnostics advising me to touch the
strip when I do blood tsts. The strips have impaired absorbtion on the
test area of the strip.Otherwise you will get false readings.
This may not apply to the strips that you buy but it does to the ones
dispensed in the UK.

My foot,an update

Sunday, April 15th, 2007

My Dr phoned me today and said my foot problem wasn’t osteomyelitis!
That is great news but when I asked him what was causing the lump, the
pain and the hot redness he didn’t know and advised me to wait and see!
Joan thinks it could be an abscess forming.I have not felt well today
and my blood sugars are not happy so there is something going on.

Glutose/Icing Usage

Monday, April 9th, 2007

Hello Howard,

Regarding the “Gluctose Tubes” (aka small tubes of Cake Icing you can get at the store), the Gluctose tubes (brand name) I believe have a slightly higher number grams of carbs in them, but regardless of which you use, both should work very nicely.

Unconscious or conscious,

Get the top off (whichever you use)

Insert into the CORNER of the mouth [NOT between the teeth, forcing anything between teeth is a mistake]

Squeeze the icing/glutose between the cheek and gum in SMALL squeezes, 2/3 should empty it.

Gently rub the cheek… as you would a young childs.

It dissolves without any trouble even if its just a glob of the stuff sitting between cheek & gum. If you squeeze too much, you’ll probably get gagging, or very minor coughing, choking… won’t be serious problem, smaller squeezes avoid the problem….
