From the penthouse to the outhouse

Monday, August 13th, 2007

So, two weeks ago I find out my A1C is down to 6.3. I’m happy as a
lark, and other similar phrases. Darn proud of myself even.
Well, guess I get to pay for that now. Darn near every day since
I’ve been high noon and night. I’ve even adjusted my carb ratio from
1:15 to 1:10. Still high… like 140-180 2 hours after meals.
Haven’t changed my eating habits at all, though I have been under
more stress than usual. Changed Novolog pens to make sure that that
wasn’t it. Changed test strips.
My Lantus is working just fine. My wake-up numbers are perfect.
Gonna go one more day before calling the endo. Figured I’d post and
see what others thought. Change injection sites? How often do those
with One Touch Ultras (or other meters) baseline their meters?
Thanks as always from the eternal newbie…

Metabolic Sydrome X

Have any of you ever been diagnosed with this? I would assume it would
be type 2s, but I was curious. I have 2 of the 5 symptoms, 3 are
required for a diagnosis. My doc is thinking I am headed this
direction, especially since one of the symptoms I don’t have yet is
blood sugar problems. I am almost paranoid about this. I know that the
docs always think T2 with me (31, not obese, but not as skinny as I
used to be, had gestational, grandfather diagnosed T2 at 83, and a T1
son), but even as a kid they thought many times that I was diabetic. I
have had hypos all my life, and at any given time when I check on my
son’s meter I have been from the 50’s to the 200+ range. Mind you, my
HgA1c is normal every year, and whenever the docs check my fasting, it
is on the edge of normal. Anyway, was just wondering if this is a
purely T2 syndrome, or if both types get it.

Whew

Wednesday, July 4th, 2007

Just had my 3rd A1C since being diagnosed. Although I’m doing better
with my ratios, I still have some highs every now and then.
First A1C in March was 12ish.
Second in May was 7.
Today’s was 6.3.
I’m absolutely ecstatic! I’m going to get below 6, but I’ll definitely
take a 6.3! Endo said I’d been around 6.1 if it wasn’t for last week’s
refried bean incident (don’t ask!).
Now, if I could just gain some weight!
Thanks to all that have posted here and those that have answered my
questions. I have learned a lot from your words, much more than from
anywhere else. I wish you all the best.

Xylitol

Anyone have experience/knowledge with/on Xylitol? Judith

Need your help…

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007

Hi all,
I am writing you all in hope that you guys can say a BIG prayer for my
Dad. He just had bypass surgery this past Thursday and he did make it
through okay. He looked great to me yesterday despite the fact that he
was still on a oxygen mask. Unfortunately, I got a call this morning
at 4AM that he had been put back on the ventilator because his
numbers/vital signs were out of whack. Also, he showed signs that his
kidneys were struggling. I love my Dad so much and I would appreciate
any good thoughts you could send his way. I know I haven’t met anyone
in person from this group but I feel like this group is like a family.
Anything you could do would be appreciated.

Insulin Pump Story Link

Tuesday, June 5th, 2007

Hi all,
I wrote in a previous post about an insulin pump story that I found
interesting but I wasn’t able to link it to the post or copy over the
pictures. I just added the story to the “link” section which shows the
pictures of the insulin pump and the infustion site in case someone
hasn’t seen one before. It also shows a picture of how it detaches
from your body.
It’s in the LINKS section under AN INSULIN PUMPING STORY
Hope you guys find it interesting as well. Goodnight, Evelyn :-)

Insulin Pump Lingo

Just in case you check out the interactive pump, these are some of
the words you will see and what they mean…:
Bolus:
Similar to when you give yourself an injection for when you are about
to eat a meal (for ex: you would normally fill a needle with 3 units
of
fast acting insulin to eat your lunch. On the pump, you would
program
the bolus to 3.0 units and then press, GO. The pump then delivers
the
insulin) Also, you can easily use fractions of units to be more
precise when covering high blood sugars or eating.
Basal:
Your “background insulin” similar to Lantus, etc.
Suspend/Resume:
