Hi Nicole…Insulin Pumps

Saturday, June 2nd, 2007

Hi Nicole…
I just wanted to let you know a great way to figure out if a pump is
right for you. I, too, was against getting the pump until I did more
research. After hearing so many people tell me they “loved” their
pump, I had to see if for myself. If you call the pump companies
(Animas Corp, Minimed, Delta Cozmo…etc), you can ask for a
representative to come out to your home to show you the pump in
person. For me, that was the trick. Once I saw how it worked and
understood the concept behind it, I wanted one. Also, the pump I got
was the Animas 1250 and on their website is an interactive pump that
you can play around with. (There are links available in this group’s
link section)
The pump can sound complicated but it is much easier than injections
(in my opinion). Like anything else, you have to give it time for
you to get used to just like when someone starts injections.

special notice

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007

We leave for dance camp tomorrow morning so I am going special notice until we return. I hate doing this because I feel so out of touch, but the camp is in Northern PA and there is no internet access, so I must.

Please, if anything happens that I should be made aware of send me an email privately.

I miss you all already!

Suggestions for Joan

Blueberries would react faster with your BS because there is no fat, where as the hoagie’s fat makes the sugar a slow burn. And easier to control over time.

I agree with you on the “where the heck did that come from” aspect of this disease. It can be a real mystery a lot of the time. I do the same as you. Treat the high and move on.

It seems like a lot, but not too bad…we went off the pump for 10 days while we were at the beach because we just couldn’t keep the adhesive on her little behind sticky after she would swim for 3-5 hours in the ocean. Plus we were told the pump can’t do rides that turn upside down or spin really fast so we were constantly taking it off for one reason or another. I hate needles and lantus and the whole kit and caboodle. Pump way easier! Taking needles on the boardwalk waiting for 830 snack and “shooting” in front of strangers, icky and tricky.

Just my 2 cents,

hey and thanks for the encouragement and I totally agree about stem cells!

Our pump start was not so extreme, but there were a couple of things that I did not agree with. Here are some things that we have done to help her numbers. And yes, I play with the pump. She is my daughter and I am with her 24/7 and they see her every 3 months. I have a great nurse Practitioner (Ken) and he has always backed me up. I never see the same doctor and don’t really give them the time of day. Ken, however, I love!

1-supposedly insulin takes 4-5 hours to leave your system, so If you are high and you try to correct at 2 hours it will not give the full dose it will cut it back some to avoid lows. I slowly changed Syd’s pump to 4 hours, then 3 and just last week 2. When we were on needles I was never taught to take previously administered insulin into account and I was tired of a high continuing on instead of getting fixed.

2-I have had to change basal rates during the night because Sydney was experiencing the dawning effect for awhile, but we have gone back to original.

3- I changed her carb to insulin ratio while she was on vacation with my mom who always underestimates carbs and then changed it back when she came home. I also recently changed her carb to insulin ratio for breakfast but no other meal. She was always high at lunch so we tried it and I noticed a better number at lunch right away.

I say, look at your chart and if you see a pattern, make a small change. Either carb to insulin ratio or something. Remember, you can have a different carb to insulin for each meal or different times of the day.

Let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.

Lee Iacocca helps joinleenow.org

Friday, April 20th, 2007

Just an update to those who have seen the recent commercials starring
Lee Iacocca for Chrysler. As you guys might remember from my
previous postings, I am a big believer in Lee Iacocca’s foundation
which supports Dr. Faustman who reversed Type 1 diabetes in mice.
Mr. Iacocca was asked to come back to do commercials for Chrylser and
instead of receiving any money for the ads, he asked them to
sponsor “joinleenow.org”. I am excited to tell everyone that we have
currently raised over $5 million towards the first $11 million needed
to start. Now, with Chrysler as a sponsor, I hope this will bring us
closer to the clinical trials which are already FDA approved.
Please check it out and there is a great video (approx. 7 minutes
long) that really expresses Mr. Iacocca’s goal and how the doctor
reversed type 1 diabetes.

A1C results but..

Friday, April 20th, 2007

Hi there,
As a few of you know from my previous postings, I am trying to get
ready to have a child. I did get my new A1C which was 6.8. Still
working on getting it lower before I try to concieve. But, there was a
surprise that I had high blood pressure this time around. I had 2
doctor’s appointments in a row and the first day it was 130/100 then
they took it again to make sure and it was 130/96. The next day I was
130/90. Since I am trying to have a child in the future, I know that
when you are pregnant, your blood pressure goes up also…So now, I am
looking for advice to help get this under control. The problem with
medication is that it can hurt a fetus. Any suggestions…??
Thanks for any advice, Evelyn :)
