transplant

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

Last night I spoke to a girl who went to dialysis with me. She got a kidney/pancreas transplant recently. I know there was talk about what you would do if you were not a diabetic for one day. Well she’s not a diabetic anymore. One thing that she told me that she did was take her daughter to Carvel. She had ice cream and didn’t worry about her sugar. This is a dream come true. She was on the list for 4 months. I’ve been on the list for 4 years. I think one of the reasons is my blood type is type o. Which is a very common blood type. Which means a longer wait. And also I’m on the list in New York, and that also means a longer wait. She gave me hope. She is doing wonderful. I was afraid of the surgery and the pills afterwards. But after talking to her I’m not that afraid anymore. I hope her new organs will last a long time.

metabolic syndrome/Melissa

Wednesday, July 11th, 2007

Melissa this was a post from another group I belong to.
Is metabolic syndrome a real condition?
Diabetes groups question existence of heart-related disorder
LONDON - The world’s top two diabetes organizations have questioned
the existence of a medical condition widely cited by drug firms.
The American Diabetes Association and European Association for the
Study of Diabetes said in a joint statement on Thursday that
“metabolic syndrome” ? which has come to be seen as a predictor of
cardiovascular disease ? was poorly defined, inconsistently used and
in need of further research.
Doctors should not diagnose people with the “syndrome” or treat it as
a separate condition until the science behind it is clear, according
to a paper to be published in the September issue of Diabetes Care and
Diabetologia.

Question about cold office environments

Tuesday, March 13th, 2007

Hey everyone, I hope you are doing well. I have been experiencing
something strange lately and I was wondering if any of you have had a
similar experience. My office is very very cold — I mean frigid.
Today it is 92 degrees outside and I am wearing heavy wool pants two
shirts, a big bulky sweater and I am still getting the chills in my
office. I have noticed that while I am at work my body doesn’t seem to
respond as well to the humalog, I like to keep my BS under 100 b/c if
it goes over that number I always get very hungry. Anyway, I am hardly
eating any carbs during the day but am still taking 2 uits every two
hours trying to keep my BS down and even then it will only go down to
the low 100’s. However, as soon as I get home from work my BS always
drops rather quickly to 60 or 70 without any extra insulin. Has anyone
heard of body temp having an effect on insulin absorbtion? I recently
read that insulin is absorb more quickly when your body temp is higher
but I wonder if a lowered body temp actually SLOWS the rate of

Cramps

Thursday, February 8th, 2007

Although not a diabetic (wife is) I sometimes experience severe muscle
cramps at night. Has to do with the intense manual labor I do at 56
years old. For immediate relief, take a spoonful of mustard. Yes, that
is the yellow stuff you put on hot dogs, etc. Don’t know why it works
but my wife heard about it and I have tried it successfully several
times. Does not necessarily relieve all the pain, but certainly helps
a bunch.
