Dang,
It is just wrong to be unable to get strips, regardless of insurance. If help is available for alcoholics, then it should be readily available to diabetics. WE have absolutely no choice. If I could give up sugar and be ‘dry’ of sugar, I would do that in a heartbeat, even if it meant going through withdraw (it probaby would… I love sugar).
Our government helps to promote having oodles of kids out of marriage. We’ll feed ‘em, clothe ‘em, provide FREE medical care for them. I have seen it in the hospital, and it is not appreciated by many of those receiving it. “Oh, it’s ok if you leave me some extra. I don’t have to pay for it anyway,” is something I heard more than once during my brief time in OB. The young lady was 18, and this was her 3rd free child, who will bring her more in welfare/ADC.
I will always give the best nursing care to my patients. There is absolutely no changing that. However, I don’t feel I should always have to hold my tongue, when part of what I make taking care of some assistance recipients is going to taxes that are going to the medicaid system.
I am curious about the opinions of those in the group…. should nurses HAVE to keep their mouth shut when someone is taking obvious advantage of the system?
One of the nurses whom I followed in my OB rotation was dealing with a reluctant mother-to-be. The woman was in her late teens, and this was number 3 or 4 for her. The woman, when told to push, said, “I can’t let my legs open.” The nurse I was following said, “You did before, you can again.” Although perhaps unprofessional, it was accurate. What do you think?
Just curious,
Joan
