trigger finger

Saturday, September 23rd, 2006

Lisa,

I had one doc tell me he would not do a release until trying the shots. He was a jerk, and as I sat there with him dictating into his little machine, I got up, turned and told him to dictate the fact that he’s an A–H— into his little microphone.

Then I went to another doc and had the release done. You may want to try another doc for a second opinion, which is, of course, just my opinion. : )

doctor appointment May 10th

Wednesday, September 20th, 2006

Congratulations, Jennifer! It is great to hear you are doing so well with the pump, and you are achieving the control you want.

I, too, have become a Stepford diabetic. I got the pump Monday, and am loving it. Already I have a problem remembering to take my insulin with me in case the pump malfunctions. And I look at about 6 months worth of syringes in the closet and wonder what can I do with them? I am sure my husband, who relies on ingenuity often, will find an auto repair use for them. I don’t believe they are accepted by Goodwill, are they?

And the Lantus. What do I do with that? Wonder if my doc would take it and give it to other patients who can’t afford it……

ok. It’s off to the Yankee Candle Company, Old Navy, and Meijer. Life is good.

tip of the day 5/9

Thursday, September 14th, 2006

Thank you, Jennifer. I have to add, though, that we should not exercise if our BG is above 300. Exercising increases the hormone response by epiniphrine, and that is a trigger to increase BG. Epinephrine has the body ready for the fight or flight response (exercise causes this…), and therefore, blood sugar is needed for either of those responses. That’s why we shouldn’t exercise above 300.

tip of the day (TOTD) 5/1

Monday, September 4th, 2006

Dang,

It is just wrong to be unable to get strips, regardless of insurance. If help is available for alcoholics, then it should be readily available to diabetics. WE have absolutely no choice. If I could give up sugar and be ‘dry’ of sugar, I would do that in a heartbeat, even if it meant going through withdraw (it probaby would… I love sugar).

Our government helps to promote having oodles of kids out of marriage. We’ll feed ‘em, clothe ‘em, provide FREE medical care for them. I have seen it in the hospital, and it is not appreciated by many of those receiving it. “Oh, it’s ok if you leave me some extra. I don’t have to pay for it anyway,” is something I heard more than once during my brief time in OB. The young lady was 18, and this was her 3rd free child, who will bring her more in welfare/ADC.

I will always give the best nursing care to my patients. There is absolutely no changing that. However, I don’t feel I should always have to hold my tongue, when part of what I make taking care of some assistance recipients is going to taxes that are going to the medicaid system.

I am curious about the opinions of those in the group…. should nurses HAVE to keep their mouth shut when someone is taking obvious advantage of the system?

One of the nurses whom I followed in my OB rotation was dealing with a reluctant mother-to-be. The woman was in her late teens, and this was number 3 or 4 for her. The woman, when told to push, said, “I can’t let my legs open.” The nurse I was following said, “You did before, you can again.” Although perhaps unprofessional, it was accurate. What do you think?

Just curious,

Joan

Alcohol & fasting

Thursday, August 31st, 2006

Judith,

I did not feel like I was starving, because I filled up on all the diet Pepsi I wanted…. it was a bar, and I laced it with lime. : )

At the time, I was not testing (back in 1983), but I never had any problem with going low. The exercise of cleaning the place, cooking, unloading boxes all contributed to keeping the sugars in line, I think. This was back in the time of Regular and Lente only. Lente was new.

Sorry I can’t give any definitive answers to this one. (puzzled look)

Fasting… literally.

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006

Jeff,

Yup, fasted for 5 days straight. Kinda a combination thing. I was at a new job, and was at work from 6am to noon, then from 5pm to 2am. VERY little sleep, no time to eat. So, I did that for 5 days. Then, shortly after, I read somewhere that is the best way for a diabetic to lose weight. And, I DID! Lots of it. Stomach had gotten smaller from not having to stretch, and I was full in much less time/amount.

Nowadays, the Lantus will cover the basal needs, and there is really, in my case, no need for any Humalog if I am not eating.

By the way, this was in a REALLY hick place, and I could turn on the jukebox and dance while I mopped the floor. Exercise was a part of it, too. : ) (One of the songs on the jukebox was, “Were You Born an A–H—, or Have You Worked at it Your Whole Life?”) Humble beginnings.

I quit that one when one of the ‘ladies’ thought I was messin’ with a friend’s husband, and she was going to rearrange my face. I am not THAT tough! LOL People were NUTS.

Any other regretful jobs?
